we have an electrolux its ok but i am so sick of my darling cats fur sticking to the carpet. For us its more a carpet issue than the vacum. we brought a house with new but seriously cheap carpet i hate cut piles especially when they are light grey so good for showing cat fur both our cat who has brown fur and mums who is white and baileys coloured.

gah i have the crappiest warehouse crap piece of shyt that mil bought for  a wedding present. i sucks sooo good that i cant push it. and it doesnt come of the ground far enough to do what its soppse to.

on the other habd my mum has a dyson and the foot broke after a month and they took ages to replace it. and it looks so complicated to use.

but i soooo want a new vacumn.

Not sure who will stock the miele. You could try ringing around the stores first before your go on the hunt for one. DH ended up shopping for ours on Ferrit.co.nz and it was couriered to us. Yeah DH and I can't stand Godfreys either. Before we got our Miele, we walked into the local Godfreys store and asked if they had the S5210 which is what we were after. The sales guy said they didn't, but rather than tell us about the other Miele model they did have the shelf right in front of us, he kept trying to take us over to some Wertheim vaccum cleaners and wanted to give us a demonstration. We said no not interested but he kept insisting We just walked out and in the end bought our Miele on Ferrit. Our first Dyson lasted for 10 years, then it completely lost it's suck - can't complain after that long tho. We then bought a Wertheim, if you go into Godfrey's you will find they push these heavily, great sales pitch, horrid vaccuum to use! I always wanted an upright and got talked out of it with the last 2 vaccuums, however, even DH hates using the Wertheim, so we went out and bought the new upright Dyson! So, we've spent over $1300 on vaccuums in the last year! We are going to try to sell the Wertheim on T/Me. I LOVE my new vaccuum and am glad we did get it. The sales guy we bought it off used to work at Godfrey's and said that Wertheim is their brand and that's why they push it so hard! We recently bought a Miele S5210 and are very happy with it. Really good on the wooden floors too .Mel. Has various suction settings to vary between furniture, rugs, carpet, and even drapes. It's not that noisy either. Yep Mel there is. You don't need a new vaccum, just a new head, one with only brushes on the end. I have wooden floors throughout my whole house and I know only to well how dirty they look even after I have just vaccumed

Hi there

As I said all brands have there pros and cons, but you really need to decide if you want a bagless or a bagged machine. Bagless are revolting to empty, but bags cost you money, so catch 22 really.

The next thing you should look at is filtration, go for a machine with a HEPA grade filter, you will definately notice less dust in your house!! You also need to know how much replacement filters are, you NEED to replace these as they DO NOT last a lifetime. They are just like clothes, they need replacing!!

Personally I would go for one of these brands (in no particular order):

Miele
Dyson
Nilfisk
Electrolux

My choice on a new vaccum if I was going to buy one would be a Miele Cat & Dog and no I didn't work for Miele!! Thats just my opinion on a strong, robust, good sucking vaccum cleaner from what I have learn't over the past 7 years! I also recommend you spend no less than $300 or $400, anything under that will be very average.

To jump on the bandwagon, we've got a Dyson too and I it so much. I used to hate vacuuming but don't mind doing it now I've got such a funky appliance to do it with. That said they are blimmin expensive to buy and I'm sure other bagless models do almost as good a job. My MIL and FIL have both a Dyson and another vacuum cleaner (an Electrolux maybe?) because they found that the Dyson was wearing the carpet in places, so when they moved house they got the second one which they use all the time, and they pull the Dyson out maybe once every couple of months to get the carpet really clean.

hehe we have the turbo head one annie...........had it for a couple of years and the carpet seems to be ok.

dyson customer service is BRILLIANT!!   we had the turbo head crap out on ours about 6mths after we got it, rang them up and a complete new head was at the door 48hrs later!   didn't have to send the old one back or anything.

then the whole vaccuum crapped out about 3mths ago, think it was our fault for not clearing out a filter   we rang them, they gave us courier details, sent a courier sticker the same day and it was picked up the following day. got it back 2 days later, all cleaned and working brilliantly! it looked like a new one.

We have a Dyson and I couldn't recommend it enough! They may be cheap to make but the work brilliantly. My husband, who fixes such things, reckons while they are good, dysons are a HUGE rip off, He says they are all plastic and probably cost about $80 to make, also, apparently they are very hard on your carpet.

I have a nilfisk bagless, its greaqt, but I get sick of having to clean the hepa fliter out all the time... Same as Pepsi. We have a Dyson which is brilliant.

We used to have a bog standard Kenwood vacuum, but I would have to vacuum pretty much daily to keep on top of it. Within half an hour of doing the house, there would be rug fluff and dog hair everywhere again.

Since getting the Dyson, the floors just seem so much cleaner and it is really quick to do a once over. I am happy to answer any questions you have and give you an honest opinion. There are good and bad points with every single brand on the market even the brand I represented!

I hate mine! Dh says there is nothing wrong with it but it really just moves the dirt around the carpet, it works well for the 1st 2min after you empty the thing and clean the filters but that take a bit and you honestly have to do it every 5 min. i really dont want to spend that much time vacuuming,

So i have told hubby that unless he lets me buy a new one im leaving lol.
What sort do you have? is it any good?
