Also I found money mans idea of drawing the money out to spend rather than doing everything on eftpos helped me. Is amazing how much you don't want to spend it when its real and sitting in your wallet, is far to easy to just swipe that card though as it almost seems like pretend money.

So I agree with Jaz - maybe you need to be saving for *something* rather than just saving.

My current targets are $20k to reduce the mortage principle when it expires (still got a way to go yet!) and $3k for a holiday in Aussie next year. Plus I know that every extra dollar we save is more time for me to stay home with bubs when we finally get around to having one! So I like to have money in a separate savings account, and watching it go up and up, knowing what I'm going to use it for.

But thats what works for me. You need to find out what motivates you, and use that for yourself.

Good luck

I write a budget every fortnight and it consists of the following:

BTW figures are examples not my actual budget or amounts

Rent [2 weeks] - $500
Car Payment - $200
Credit card 1 - $200
Credit Card 2 - $200
Savings - $400 (Saving amount only ever changes if an emergency arrises and we have to use part of the normal amount)
Health Ins - $150 (once a Month)
Phone - $100 (Once a Month)
Power - $300 (3 Monthly)

Spending for the fortnight - $600 (including groceries, shopping, lay-by's, coffee, movies etc)

This may not help but I love writing my budget and seeing where our money is going. Once we have used our allocated spending money, thats it, no more. I move money between 4 accounts.

1 - Savings acc where wages go and where all AP's and HP's go from
2 - Cheq acc for weekly/fortnightly spending only
3 - Another savings acc to hold funds for future payments or bills
4 - High earning Savings acc for savings only.

If you are having trouble I'd go and see a financial advisor so they can look into your finances and give you more selective advice

For example, you may decide to save $500 by mid November for a weekend away by eliminating clothes shopping, making your own lunches. This will be easier to stick to than just trying to save.

Give yourself a few treats (within your allowance of course).

(have three columns for every month).

So in teh second column put down what it normally cost you.

In the third one you update it as stuff comes off your account or you pay for it.

so you can see what you budgeted and what you actually paid.

Now put down an amount you want to go in savings each month.

When salary comes in move this immediately to another account which gets higher interest and you tell yourself you wont touch at all. (before any bills even get paid)

Dont forget to put some spending money in here for you and your partner and do this with him. (if finances are joined off course)

If you have trouble with controlling it then I will suggest draw cash for yourself for spending and when it is finished that is done and say not until next month.

I seem to have spent a little here and a little there and now we have almost nothing left in the lead up to Christmas. I have nothing to show for it other than a full wardrobe!

It's nuts as we have a good household income and yet have nothing to show for it.

I'm really over frittering my money away and want to stay on track...more to the point HAVE to stay on track.

Any good tips?
