we had a guy who organises these trips and he soooo annoyed me. "look at these people, they worship cows, how stupid" - that was a direct quote. also kept talking about how "primitive" they were.

ETA: I didn't mean don't go on VSA volunteer placements... but there are companies that offer volunteers placements that require a fee for you to participate. Usually a thousand dollars or so.

and there is a company that does volunteer trips - you go overseas and help out with a third world country village - teaching english, building stuff - whatever. This is where I would start too.....the amount of people on the waiting list is incredible. Even if it cleared the back log.

    aria.org.nz for all the info, but Aria is a little girl in Auckland who was born with total intestinal aganglionosis or total Hirschsprung’s disease.

    It's very rare and there is no cure, and it means she would never be able to digest food. Her parents were told there was nothing that could be done to save her, but she's over 2 years old now and hanging in there. Her only hope of long term survival and a chance to eat rests in bowel transplant.     Hmmmm, tough choice. But wouldn't it be awesome?!

    I'd pick a school classroom where the teacher could incorporate this into their curriculum, and 'give' each of them a sponsor child for a few years. The child would be sponsored in their name, and they'd be asked to keep in touch with the child through letter-writing. Then they'd get a field trip one summer hols where they and a parent visit the child in their community and stay there for a number of weeks helping on projects there. I'd hope that out of a group of 30 or so kids a good number of them would become inspired to help eradicate poverty, and might use part of their adult lives for that. There could be a Gareth Morgan in the class!

    Setting up a programme (staffed by Romanian locals) of free/sponsored school education, contraception, and nutritious school meals in Romania for poor communities. And setting up a means of keeping raising funds for it.

    Funding the work of a couple we have heard of who live on the bones of their bums and still quite literally feed hundreds of starving children each week, but have to turn away most of the kids that come to them because they don't have the resources to feed them all

    Kid's first burns unit
    Women's refuge

    Just talking to DH about this and we decided we would set up our own ongoing charity/charitable trust to benefit our local area/community. I worked with a local privately owned trust last year who was very quietly doing some amazing work, from one man's legacy, and I'd love to do the same one day.

    Other charities I'd support:

    Women's Refuge
    Ronald McDonald House (or something similar)
    Hospice
