grrr, no wonder there's so much confusion out there when even some Plunket & Police don't seem to know what's right?

Yes, a carseat MUST be tethered/anchor bolted to the car IF the carseat has a tether attached to it.

Daisy... I'm not sure how you're meant to get around it... all I can say is that it is sooo much safer to have the carseat tethered/bolted in. It would cost around $30 to $40 to get a bolt installed into a car, better than a $150 fine, plus it could save your baby/child's life in a crash

Lizzle, that is so unfair that you had to go and buy new carseats!

Okay Emma you are in Gisborne so let me rant about my run in with gisborne plunket

I was stopped by the police and plunket in my car - in a kids car seat thing. I was pretty smug until they told me that ALL car seats for children under 3 HAD to have a teether strap and all cars HAD to have the bolt. THey then said my car seats for Jake and Taine were both expired. When i said that I had heard that you only had to have the seat teethered if it had a strap they told me I was out of the country when the law came through.
I was then told if i bought two new car seats through Turanga ararau that my $300 fine would be wiped.

I did that and had the fines wiped. i was really upset

AND then...went to Land and Transport and found out
   1. Car seats by law MUST be teethered and bolted IF they have a strap. If you don't have a strap - which many don't, they don't need to be teethered
2. My car seats were perfectly okay - not "expired" like they claimed


I was really really annoyed. If you are being told things like I was, ask to see proof from the Land Transport website.

Seroiusly whoops! Our carseat is constantly moved between cars and most of the time in friends cars (I am working on getting my lisence) so I cant exactly set the teather strap up in ever single car we travel in. How am I supposed to get around that??

Maybe plunket is talking about convertible car seats? The ones which go rear facing & then forward facing. I guess on average they would only fit up to about a 3 year old.
We've got a tethered booster seat in Mum's car for Matthew. It's a safe & sound maxi rider & is forward facing only, but goes up to quite a high weight limit. Well my 4 year old is still in a tethered seat. That sounds wrong
Plunket told me she is fine to stay in it as long as her eyes and ears were not above the top of the seat. Can anyone clarify whats the law regarding car seats?

We recently went to plunket and they said the bolted car seat it for only up to 3 year olds ( we want a spair one for my mums car and ben is 2 and a bit)

So we thought we could get him a booster seat thingy that you see on all the websites that go from birth to 11kgs

Is this legal?If its not how can they sell them?

I'm confused
