For both sides of the family we pick names out of the hat and buy for that person, like for say something for under $20, it's really good.

I bought The Australian Womans Weekly mag yesterday (with Trelise Cooper on the cover) and there is some good christmas recipes in there too for baking cakes, puddings etc

Oh yeah, I totally forgot but a cousin did a recipe book too.

She asked all the family to submit a recipe each and then put them all together in a little spiral bound book for Xmas. The best present I have ever recieved was from my best friend for my birthday. I love cooking so she got a recipe binder and in it put recipies from all the different countries that I had travelled to (was living in Uk so had done lots of travel), They were all typed out in the same format and had flags of the relevant countries. I thought it was an amazingly thoughtful gift and only took her time rather than money.

I agree with the baking thing i have done this several times and it always is appreciated., i have a really easy recipe for white chocolate truffles if anyone wants it.

Plant gifts are good too and if you want to save yourself some money on these go and buy a packet of seed or 2 and grow the plants yourself there is still time they just might not be flowering. Or you could make up a book of little vouchers and include things in them like babysitiing, housework etc.

I get a new pic of my nephew every year and I really love it.    

I think my parents enjoy that kinda thing - any crap that Jake makes at daycare and I'm talking about a piece of card with some mark on the front - not a lot of effort really - takes pride of place on the mantlepiece.

Dh's parents are slightly different. A few years ago for xmas the boys painted mugs. they were actually pretty cool. In-laws (who i get on relatively well with), didn't even say thank you. For mothers day they made pen holders and MIL didn't take it when hse went to AUs (permanently) and I later found it in the rubbish. But then they moan about not having a close relationship withthe kids.....grrrr

Just a quick question to everyone - how does everyone feel about getting something of the kids or their wedding say?

I lady at work said the other week that she got for her birthday a calender of the grandkids, she said its lovely, but every birthday or Christmas it is always something like that and she doesnt want to be rude to them, but she has got so much of their stuff type thing? I made the Christmas Cake recipe out of the Treasures mag last night... mmm mm mmmm!!! (I added some Sherry too ) I used the cardboard box tins that is also in the mag
I've decided this year I will make the recipe but make muffin sized cakes & decorate them nicely, possibly make some Xmas shaped homemade Chocolates... wrap them up nice with ribbon etc.

We recently had some portraits taken so I'm going to make frames for them for parents, grandparents etc..

We usually only buy for kids too. We are getting photos of the girls on CD and some printed for the grandparents.

The rest of the family is mostly done by secret santa, that is we only have to buy for one. Just $20 for that here. I forgot, my mum and dad have 7 grandkids so this year my bros and sis's are going in together to get a set of mugs for mum and dad (each mug will have a pic of one of the kids and we might do an 8th mug with a pic of the 6 of us when we were kids). 

DH and I actually bought mum mugs last year but I think this is such a sweet idea and a great way for us all to save money too.

I quite like the idea of canvas blocks tho, I might price them then have a chat to my older sis when I see her next week.

For this year I am making cushions. the kids will decorate with some paint and I'll write "i love you relative" on them.

In the past we have done - plates with handprints on them, mugs painted by the kids, paintings (i do the background and the kids scribble on the front), laminated photos on a cd (coasters), calendar....usually something kid oriented.

I've been thinking about this same idea
In the latest little Treasures mag there is a recipe from simon Holst on making mini Christmas cakes, so I'm going to try to makes those for the in-laws and my boss and work colleagues.
I also thought making gingerbread stars and christmas trees for the nephews and nieces and also make chocolate moulds.

Our family does this thing where everyones names are put into a hat you pull one person out and you buy a $50 present for that person. It works out GREAT, we spend $100 between DH and I now on my whole family - as opossed to $250+

How many people in your family? Maybe it might be worth a go suggesting something like that?

What about maybe making a cookbook - with photos through it or something - maybe from Momento or digitalmax or something? Last year, my Mum planted a begonia in a hanging basket for me about this time of year. By summer, it looked beautiful and was a lovely present

I often plant hanging baskets in advance of people's birthday's - doesn't cost much (at all!) and they look lovely. Yes, home made stuff is always a hit with my family.

For my MIL/FIL's birthdays this year I made up a big gift basket with homemade bread, pasta sauce, pesto, gourmet rocky road, relish and cookies. So with the economy the way it is and cost of living on the rise, I'm really dreading Christmas.
I know Hannah's going to be spoilt rotten so DH and I have only got a couple of little things for her, knowing she's not going to be missing out.

But I'm worried about what to get family members.
I know they won't be expecting anything from us, but I'd still like to do something for them.
I'm not a great artist or craftsperson, but I am a qualified chef/baker, so I'm thinking something along those lines.

What does everyone else do for family members pressies?
