It's never too late! I'd say if you've already started with purees the hardest part for you (generic 'you' there) is to let them go at their own pace. Yup will be trying this with any future children I may have ...

I agree with Nikki above, with the normal introduction of solids they ease bubs into them by starting off with puree, then mash, then chunky etc etc

Whereas if they were to start on 'chunkier' or more solid foods first off, they'd grasp an understanding of chewing and swallowing mechanisms much faster because it's all they've been given from the start, kids love to explore and this is a fantastic way of introducing them to all the diff foods.

That choking reflex is blardy good.

Kicking myself that I hadn't found out about baby-led weaning prior to starting the boy on solids, he was basically on puree for the first year, very reluctant to move off them as well. One day I just gave them up and only offered him finger foods. He basically didn't know how to chew or swallow properly, and now 6 or so months later he's slowly getting there. He can swallow pasta, bread, cheese etc etc. Still can't handle meat...

I won't pretend to be an expert here but there is a certain amount of gagging with any sort of 'learning how to eat' solids. It's a reflex that *stops* choking... and eventually they get the hang of it.

No fiona.

the whole point is no purees and therefore you eliminate having to transition your child from puree to smooth to lumpy.

in the beginning they will mouth the food and suck it and they learn to cope with bigger bits sooner and on their own terms.

Keziah sometimes sticks to much in her mouth and gags a little but other then that we haven't had any scary choking experiences.
Even when they haven't got any teeth their wee gums are very powerful and it's amazing what they can get through

(Bizzy, Keziah wasn't overly fussed on baby rice either... brenna she pretty much eats what we do now and its only been a short while.
tonight she had chicken and mashed potato and i dont have to feed her with a spoon either.

Keziah does this too, Bizzy and it is amazing what they'll eat (even if they haven't got many or any teeth) It's so much easier with baby lead weaning than having to go through that whole puree mush stage

Its been less than a month since eden really started having food and i am loving not having to puree for her and spoon feed her.
Am also loving the variety of food she has been able to eat. She has loved the sushi, but wasnt so keen on the asparagus; roast veges and broccoli went down really well and hummus and rice crackers seem to be a big favourite. Oh and this morning she tried porridge and really loved that. she looked so funny trying to get more porridge into her mouth while steadfastly holding onto her toast!
I've always believed in letting the kids experiment with their food and this just seems like such a logical thing to do...
