We're in Kapiti, Paraparaumu Beach to be exact. We pay $250 a week for an almost new 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom townhouse apartment 2 minutes walk from the beach. It's an awesome area to live in, the shops are close, the beach is there, the public transport is great.. Oh my gosh, I feel for you living in Ohakune, great to visit in ski season but I def couldnt live there without going insane!!! I need lots of people around me and lots to do, hence why I love wellington! To pieces!
Im orginally from auckland but didnt really like it that much, pretty expensive too, has nice parts though!

We're in Tawa and we pay $220 for a two bedroom place, which is actually pretty average but they go up to anywhere close to $270 a week.

Cindy, you are right its not as cold as everyone says.... its colder!!! lol! I'm an ex Invercargillian, and I didn't used to think it was that bad till I moved further north and almost died of heat stroke. Now when I go back, even in the summer, I am freezing and wear jersys and use leccy blankies! lol!
Seriously though, Invercargill is a fantastic place, and cheap as chips if you wanted to buy, and renting is good there as well. Hi all..

I thought southland had the cheapest rent around..

We get a farm house with dh's job so we dont pay rent but on adverage you get a 3 roomed house for up to $300, Also depends on what area of Invercargill/Southland..

And its not as cold as everyone says it is.. Nat has lived in Auckland (Whangaparaoa), Tauranga, Hamilton and now Ohakune.
I've lived in Tauranga, Taupo, Katikati, Wellington, Picton, Blenheim, Hamilton and now Ohakune.

We loved Hamilton, but are not sure if going back would be best for us. Nathaniel loved living in Auckland, and I loved living in Wellington... talk about opposite ends of the island! I'm happy to live in Auckland if that's where we end up, and Nat's interested in Wellington.

I have lived in (flated) Palmerston north, Hamilton, Auckland and Wellington. Price wise Palmy and Hamilton are prbably better bets- I lived in nice places in both those areas for around the $200 mark but didn't really like the cities themselves. I hated Auckland with a vengence but lots of people love it. I love love love Wellington I love everything about living here (and its not that windy!) but I think different people like different things about living in the city. Its most important for me to be close to my family and have friends and freindly people around.

Rosie where abouts in Hastings are you? I lived in Konini Street (Mahora) last year. We moved back to Dannevirke in August as we wanted to buy a house before baby was born and could only afford back here - we love it here, but its cos we grew up here and still know heaps of people. Our house is on a quatre acre section, 3 big bedrooms, open plan living, huge deck... only cost us $101,000! Ah well, the sell/buy prices were good, but the catch was that Rols dad part owns - so some of it went to him, and there was also a small settlement to be paid to his ex as well. Still not a big problem, we will have the 'revolving' credit portion (higher interest rate on that bit) of our mortgage nailed in just under a year, which has me really stoked.

It also occurred to me that I never really knew whether our mortgage was 100%, either that or the baby brain turned that particular thought to mush, but as a result of this thread it occurred to me that ours probably isn't.

Simonne - very good point about capital gains, with a house we have decent equity, and our other debts are manageable, I think all there really is at the moment is my student loan, everything else like bills and credit cards is managed by budgeting.

I will also point out that I used to be SO hopeless with managing money, I think I got it from my mum Mind you, despite our financial style being very similar, she has been quite a smart cookie as far as managing investments / inheritance from her parents goes, so at least has some kind of 'backup' if everything were to turn pear shaped.

As far as baby things go, I think we'd be able to manage ok with the new house and two kids, but IF it was ever more than that we'd probably have to look at something bigger still. I'm also lucky that if I really really wanted to, we've worked out a plan so that I could have the entire first year off work completely with bubs, although at this stage it would still mean resigning from my job. I'm still inclined to say that now I've (finally!) been offered a very reasonable plan for returning to work part time after maternity leave, that's what I'll do - but it is very much wait and see.

Wow, I hate to think of having to pay "real" rent again. We pay $60 per week for a 5 bedroom + office with a four car garage and single carport.....but its only so cheap because it comes with my fiancee's job so it's not a very typical price for our area. Have you thought about Hawkes Bay? Nice and warm - great for your mood! The only rental on TM at the mo in Hastings is $275/wk for 3 beds. Don't rent in Flaxmere. I don't know anything about napier really - great for shops. I live 1km easy flat walk from town - 10 mins without a triple buggy, 15 with. We randomly think about buying, I got quite serious about it when Willie and I split up as our Family Trust is set up to help with a deposit etc., we looked at a lot of places but the prices in Auckland are insane and my Dad (the property developer) insists that the market will let up. B and both wish we could own our home, it would be better than renting, we recently even looked at it, but there is a huge difference between what we can afford and what prices acutally are. We're not helped by the fact that we would need a 100% home loan.

In short, if I was working full time and if we got rid of all the rest of our debt we could do a mortgage. But we decided that it was more important to us right now that I have at least a year at home with our baby. If we tried to buy now I would have to go back to work immediately. We're even open to the idea that I may not want to go back to work at all until our baby is school age.

In short we could either do a house or a baby. Not both. It's just the choice we had to make.

We will buy one day (we hope!) and it will be awesome when we do but we've accepted that it may not be until our kid/s are school age. You're right about the rent/buy thing - I think the big consideration is that even if you are paying a bit more than renting, it's not dead money. You have capital gains, and inroads into the principal. But that's me - I'm in the same boat as you - really, really lucky to be in the position we are in, at our age.

Well, since we've already established the fact that I'm crazy already, I feel fairly confident in my ability to say that even though Paws et al. are right in that a mortgage is more than renting - I am far happier owning our own home than renting. We'll be moving really soon, but our house here in Mt Wellington is almost TOO big, although I love it to death - half acre section, enormous garden, double garage, granny flat downstairs, three bedrooms plus deck, lounge, kitchen etc upstairs. It sold for $500K, but a developer bought it so it's likely to be flattened *sigh* Our new place is on a much smaller section but at least the house is spacious, 3brm again (2 big, one smaller for bubs), lounge / dining, big kitchen, OSP (plus garage) and a huge basement - bought for $336K I think ! (Will blame the baby brain for not being able to remember exactly...) Mortgage wise, we used to be with Westpac, ick ! We have moved ALL our accounts over to KiwiBank, who at least for us have more reasonable rates and fees etc.

I'm not particularly religious, but I also feel compelled to stop at this stage and say that I realise just how lucky I am to own a house, have a wonderful husband, baby on the way and stable home life etc - I know it's still not that common at my age (at least as far as I'm aware), so am really really thankful for being able to have all these things when some people really struggle, or have it much worse.

I know what you mean Paws ...The husband and I just refixed the mortgage last month at the new (marvellously high!) interest rates *shudder* and we don't even have a whopping mortgage! (well, it's whopping enough ...but I work in a legal office and I see a lot worse! I'm in Avondale (Auckland) on teh Mt Albert fringe which is the 'nicer' side of Avondale and we pay $320 for a 3 brm, but to be honest, 2 of the bedrooms are really small and the house is really drafty and cold in winter and a heat trap in summer. We will be moving before the twins are born for sure as we need more space. We're looking at around $400-$420 for a 4 brm in the same area.

Well I live in Wellington... same side of the city as Kat (opposite to the other Wellingtonians) and we pay $350 for a nice 3 bedroom place, and that was the cheapest we could find! Anything remotely similar was around $450 for 3 bedrooms. So yeah... wouldn't move this side of Welly if you are looking for cheap rent! In saying that though, I love it here. Not at the moment... just somewhere where we have choices! At the moment, we're attending a church because it's the best of what's available, yet Nat and I don't feel like we "belong" there.

The only place we don't want to go is Tauranga... my inlaws are there, and my family is 30 minutes north of there in Katikati. We pay $240 for 3 bdrm, carport(no gge which sux),smallish size lawn but still bg enufff for kids to play on(if u get wot i mean??).I am in a nice quet street wiith dairy,fish n chip shop within 5 min walk and 40 min walk with pram and 2 kids to new world and warehouse(dangerous being so close to W/H lol) and bout 10-15 min walk to MIL photography studio,bakery chemist etc

For Auckland rentals Becca, check out www.nzherald.co.nz and on the left hand side there is a menu with rental advertisements. It's pretty steep rent, but of course, often income levels kind of balance that out. I have a mortgage so I'm not too up with rentals, but Al and I just sold a rental property which we rented for $285 per week. It was a small 3brm on its own (about 400-450sqm) section, fenced, with a carport and a small shed. This was in Papatoetoe in a good school zone, and we were renting it cheaply to keep good tenants. We were told by various rental agents that we could get $300+. The $285 was also cheap when it was set, 2 years ago. Our tenants had previously been paying that for a 2brm unit in a worse area of Papatoetoe.

If you are looking at areas - Al and I have a house in HIllpark in Manurewa and we love it there. We pay $290.00 per week for our 2 year old 2 bedroom home in Glenfield on Auckland's North Shore.

Looking at prices at the moment a 3 bedroom home on the Shore seems to be around $300.00 - $400.00 depending on the area.

We live in Tawa and pay $275 for a 3 bedroom damp drafty cold house, surrounded by state housing, double garage but u can only use one coz the other door is broken and you have the maintain the gardens, but the one we are looking at moving into is $280 for a 3bdroom house, double garage, woodburner, and gardens maintained by landlord and in a nice area. I have a mortgage.....but I have to say it is damn expensive in auckland. My aunt who rents a 2 bedroom flat pays $240/week. She lives in Manurewa and is under a good primary school. My uncle lives in a one bedroom flat in papatoetoe and pays $180.00 and this a small flat....but again it falls under a good primary zone.

If you go towards Mt Roskill (has the best high school the you could pay any thing from $250 up for a 2 bedroom flat/house (and I think I am under stating a bit).

I was told that my house would rent out for $380 - $400 a week. I have a 3 bedroom house.

Don't move to Wellington! Unless you want to be out Tawa way, even that is getting expensive.. we are pretty much central Wellington and we pay $260 for a small 2 bedroom flat, we have a little outdoor area out the front which is concreted with a lil garden my partner made and we put up a washing line there too.

im in nelson it is a great place to live and raise kids, but some people i know think its too quiet here!! lol.

i have a mortgage but at a guess an average rent on 3 bedroom house could be anything from $250 to $320 a week depending on the area.... haha, man i have no real idea!!
but theres heaps more nice areas around to live here than not, if that makes sense!

We're talking about moving at the end of the year... where we go will depend on the teaching jobs available, but we need to get an idea on the average rent around the country... as there are ladies here from pretty much all over NZ, I thought I'd ask you:

Where do you live? How much rent do you pay? For what sized place? (and only if you want to) What sort of area is that (good area? average area?)

To give you an idea of what I'm after:
We're in Ohakune, and pay $105 per week for a large 3 bedroom house. This is one of the quieter streets, but Ohakune's only big enough to have 3 areas: in town, out of town and the Junction!
