Author: cat007
Subject: 21994
Posted: 28 October 2008 at 10:18pm

Sounds like conjunctivitis. My boys have had it continuously off and on for the last couple of months. Its caused by blocked and immature tearducts and eventually they get small infections in them. Nothing to worry about. Breast milk works a treat to get rid of it - if not try the saline (salty water). The immature tearducts will eventually clear out and drain properly with time - your little one will grow out of it (it is a really common thing with babies)

One extra point - it is extremely contagious - dont use the same cloth on the other eye or touch the infected gummy eye and then rub your face/eyes etc - you will spread the infection even to yourself. Again it doesnt cause any harm - its just a pain to have to try to get rid of it.

If that doesnt work, a doctor can prescribe you some eye drops which will clear it up very quickly.

I will attempt to try the breast milk tomorrow if my nipples cooperate!
Make sure you wipe from the inside of the eye (by the nose) out, and then get a clean piece of cotton wool before wiping again. Zach has had a sticky eye for about 3 weeks now, we just keep it clean, it'll sort itself out eventually.

Hope this helps
Debs
