I had my dress made and DH's aunt made my bridesmaids dresses. It worked out pretty cheap in the end. I sold my dress after the wedding and got some cash back. It is not like I was going to wear it again. I think black bridesmaid dresses look really classy.   We went to a wedding in Australia and they had black and white jelly beans on the tables and the black looked great against the cream of the bride. HUGE options for flower colours as well.

I had brown bridesmaids... one was about a size 6 and one was about 6 months pregnant. I brought the fabric and they got them made. One paid $200 and the other paid $60.... oh that would be cool Shannon , thanks , they are size 6 (but has dress alterer that alters clothes for her quite regularly) , size 12 and about size 16 , maybe 14 ...I'll have to ask her actually ....have put off asking outright , cos shes put on a bit of weight (last year she was a size 10 ) and she might get upset , but im going to have to ...its either that or measure her when shes sleeping ...

I think black is totally fine these days for BM dresses. A black dress does not go out of fashion (usually).

What a lovely idea! They (and you!) look stunning.

We did a similar but opposite idea. My three bridesmaids had very different colouring, and we couldn't find one colour which looked good on them all. So I chose one fabric and one dress design, and they all had a different colour (teal, purple-y blue and light blue). I loved the effect - it made it look a bit less formal (and less 'quadrupley' lol) and they were all happy too.

We got the dresses made - I would do it again, but would say to be careful about who you get to do them! I loved the result actually, I thought they looked beautiful, and I'm not really a fan of adult women in matching 'quadruplet' outfits anyway

no probs at all..

my aunty made them - just black strapless dress and then she made a sash and tacked it on on the day of the wedding..
the sash is the same colour as my dresss. and we just added some colour with out flowers

Ok so I didnt have BM so that was not a problem .....

However my mum works at Pagani and she said that she is surprised how many brides buy their dresses and the BM dresses from them. Mum had to order the right sizes from all over the country for one bride and the prices are sooo reasonable. They have really nice dresses there. As the wedding was in Rarotonga the BM dress was knee length. I thought about having my BMs dresses made but it seemed too hard given that they were in Nelson and Brisbane and I was in Singapore! Plus they're both essentially the same size and similar colouring so it was much simpler in the end to buy something off the rack.

I chose something from Max, not REALLY loving it but thought it would do and then about 4 weeks before the wedding I was in Chch and saw the PERFECT dress in a shop window and bought those instead - got a store credit at Max

Since your BMs aren't plus sizes I'd try buying off the rack first - you might find something that really works and you might get a good deal. I found my dressmaker off trade me, but actually went to her store as wanted to see what the styles looked like.
She gave a long list of which measurements she needed, the dresses were made in china, and I had to get them made 4 months in advance to get them in time for a March wedding, (no making over Christmas/Chinese new year).
I was measuring my nieces who are 11 and 6, they grew a lot in 4 months.

My BM dress is getting made in a style similar-ish to my dress (same neckline). The total cost is approx $70, which is far cheaper than we could buy it for (if we could find one anywhere!!). Plus it meant we weren't restricted with colours, as she has gone with a stunning duck egg blue. We hired out dresses.

We ended up with some really nice ones at a pretty reasonale price ( I wanted really fancy ones) And they did all the alterations for us. It was a wee bit of a pain as they were an hours drive away. We didnt get the dresses untill 2 days before the wedding and one of them they gave us was the wrong one (long story but we had to send a BM in to find the right dress - they put it on a display :S. And she only just made it back in time for the wedding)

I would suggest if you are getting them made or hiring that you go somewhere fairly close. If I did it again I would most likey buy my dresses or get them made really early from trademe - just hope noone changes size to soon.

Hey fluery , having burgundy colour and BMs are size 6 ,12 and 16 ....am not averse to black , but is that too ...black ...in a forest wedding ?
They all want long dresses too, which is fine, but seems cocktail length is the "in thing " atm

When I was a bridesmaid back in March, my dress was made in Tauranga... and I was in Wellington! And also in the midst of losing weight. So I had to email my measurements through to the bride almost weekly as they kept changing. When the dress arrived with only about 3 weeks to go, the zip did up only half way and I really started to panic. I felt bad for the bride (although she was as calm as anything and not panicked at all!) and I had to organise to get it adjusted. It was far too much stress, but everything turned out fine and the dress fit perfectly in the end.

For my bridesmaids, I bought material for the skirts and had those made by a friend, and bought tops from Stax. I would rather buy than get made! I brought my BM dresses.

When I was a BMI had one dress brought for me from Stax and the other was made to measure.. the brought one was definitely the better and nicer one.

Just keep an eye out for sales, go to Dressmart there is a Stax outlet store there.

Second checking out Ezibuy especially their Grace Hill range.

I got mine off trademe, can't remember how much i paid though but I did get 2 the same and had them altered slightly to fit, it was so much easier that way.

I had only had 1 bridemaids and brought her dress from Stax. I can't remember how much I paid, but pretty such it was under $100 and it is a dress that she can wear again.

I got my 2x bridesmaid dresses from Shanton for $20 each at an end of season sale almost a year before my wedding. I knew I was definitely having 1 bridesmaid and got the 2nd one incase I ended up with 2 (which I did).

There are heaps of affordable made to measure ones on trademe :) But my darling head bridesmaid never got her measurements to me in time, so we went to Pagani and got gorgeous ball gowns from there. It made it easy because the bridesmaids lived in different parts of the country and could go into the store with the code, and try the dress on :)

I also brought mine of Trademe they were under 200 each and made to measure. My Sil is in the process of organising her wedding and has been quoted around 100 - 150 for making + material thats in dunedin. If you can manage to get something at stax on sale that you like that can be a good option a friend did that. My mum made mine for my BM's. I brought the material (about $70 for 2 dresses) and my mum had the rest of the stuff. So yeah I paid for them - but they paid for almost everything else I think.

My bridesmaids dresses were bought from Stax. But I'm bridesmaid for a friend and we went dress shopping today. Principals have HEAPS of gorgeous dresses in at the moment and all very reasonably priced. There aren't many floor length so depends if you want that or more knee length. I got my bridesmaid and flower girl dresses from a place in Northcote, chinese place where they make to measure.
I can't sew, and my chief bm is plus size, so off the rack wasn't an option. Also had an 11yr old and a 6 yr old to fit.
The $$ of the dresses was the same as Staxs so comparable to buying.
