Good luck for tomorrow!

My smear came back normal this time but I have just returned from the gynaeocologist this afternoon and had a colopscopy while I was there. I have a dodgy area, but she is 99% sure it is fine, but just wants to get it checked out!

I can honestly say after having the biopsy today, child birth was by FAR a million times worse than the biopsy!! I barely even felt it, and then she said I might get severe cramping and even contraction feeling pain this afternoon, but so far I am feeling quite normal

It'll be a walk in the park

I'm going to jump on the bandwagon with Emma & others - I can't urge enough how important it really is to get cervical smears done regularly.

I've had 6 abnormal smears to date and have (for the most part) been on 6 -monthly checks but thankfully my last came back normal (YAY) so I'm now up to yearly checks.

I had a Colposcopy (biopsy of the cervix) in last Nov and it wasn't the most pleasant of experiences, I had severe cramping for days after and bled quite heavily afterwards ...hoping like hell I never have to do that again!

I have HPV so am more at risk of getting cervical cancer later down the track, that AND the fact that it is in our family history. My Aunty has just had a hysterectomy (28th Oct) as a precautionary measure after being diagnosed with AND treated for Cervical Cancer in September.It has knocked her around quite a bit - especially since she is on her own with no dependants or partner to really turn to . She has her extended family, but I guess it's not the same ...

Anyway enough rambling - If you haven't been in a while OR at all - I strongly recommend that you do, you never know what curve balls life is going to throw at you - and cervical cancer is just ONE of them ...

oh ok i thought so, i think im eligible to get a free injection thing to supposdly stop that happening to me, BUT i keep on forgetting to ask a doctor or my midwife if it is safe to have the injection of the stuff while im pregnant, it might not be free by the time baby is born so not sure what i will do haha

One day i will remember to ask though lolz.

Its the one for cervical cancer. It checks for any abnormal cells, that can turn into cancer.

Yep you will just have to go back for another one if they come back abmornal (my sister is just going through this so is asking me so many questions about what will happen).

I went through it about 7 years ago (having smears 6 monthly), then I had Andrew and they are fine but still on yearly due to my history.

A couple of tests of mine have come back 'abnormal' and 'inconclusive' so I just had to get them re-done. And then the next results came back fine. So even if you get an abnormal result, don't stress too much about it... they will re-test to double check.

Shena I had one smear 3 years ago that came back abnormal. I have had yearly smears since then and now they are normal I am back to 3 yearly. Don't know what made it abnormal and they certainly didn't make me stress about it, just told me to come back in 1 year as opposed to 3 years.

You will be fine honestly!! It is nothing to worry about!

Oh mine is already booked in for wednesday at 8.30am. I plucked up the courage lol.

I was doing to reading about smears and Im not so scared now as I know that abnormal cells doesnt mean cancer but that those cells can possibly turn into cancer later down the track if not treated or kept an eye on etc.

i will just be glad to have it over and done with for now! Its more the actual prodding around im scared about lol

but not sure if i said this before it is super important ! I know people who don't go and prefer to ignore it but it's a very treatable cancer if found early on..I'm high risk and it used to bother me but not anymore i just go get done and then go about the rest of the year knowing if they find something it will be caught early.. my nurse just does it too but I definitely have to pay for getting it done..

yeah 6 weeks(i know cause she rang me the day they came in)...not sure why something about the place that gets them done.

most places take 7 days to a week.. i had just had swabs (three sets done when pregnant) so wasnt too worried it took so long and I get them done yearly as well....
but yes it is a long time..i wonder if they do preliminary results and as long as they are fine it takes the whole time.. she is hoping it will go back to 10 days very soon

6 weeks!? Are you sure? My mum just had hers done a few weeks ago and they told her 1 week.
6 weeks is a hell of a long to time to wait for something as important as this?!

In regards to the cost of smear tests, they are suppose to be free, you just pay for the consultation fee.

The only time you pay for a smear test is if you get the ThinPrep one done. There have been studies done between traditional smear tests and ThinPrep, and there really isn't any difference in picking abnormalities.

I've never bled with a traditional smear test, and they only take the tinest scraping, and I have a pretty sensitive cervix.

I get one done on a yearly basis. So worth it, as they can pick up abnormalities pretty well.

i'm jumping aboard the bandwagon too

smear tests are so important and for a few minutes of discomfort/embarrassment isn't your life worth it in the long run! i had a lovely lady i worked with who died of cervical cancer, which could have been very easily prevented and she left two very young children for her hubby to raise without her.

as for the normal versus the thin prep - i always do the thin prep as my cervix hates being swabbed so tends to spot/bleed (yeah i know TMI) so if i have the normal it comes back inconclusive with the thinprep it can cope with some blood so i don't have to have them repeated - and yes I have to have them yearly

as for who to have it done by - have had both male and female drs - and personally find the male drs are gentler and more respectful as the female drs were not into distractive small talk and had the attitute of 'suck it up princess'

so please please get your smear done. if not for yourself, for your kids!

I had my last one done when Leah had her shots (10 month I think - do they have shots then?) I did it to remember when I had it, well that doesn't seem to have worked does it!!!!

Sheza did you mention when you booked your smear that you had recently had a baby? I was due a smear when I was pg so put it off till after and my dr didn't want me having it till 6mths after I had Jack. I ended up seeing the female dr at the practice and she also asked how long it had been since Jack was born. Maybe it is just their practice policy?

I hated mine my first one i cried like a baby very prudish my second was the day I found out about Alan an i laughed kid you not it was awful nervous laugh not had one since got one booked for end of next month. So hoping I will get AF back that week. I find them wose then having a baby cause at least with the M/W you kinda know them better rather then a random nurse.. pity the MW can't just do them then I would get mine ti do a smear.

I had my first one when I was preg and they said it was fine. I remember them making this huge deal about getting an iud in and had a nurse there to hold my hand and it is nothing compared to labour/childbirth/examinations while in labour.

minik8e did you have lutes (SP?) treatment? i have a good friend who had to have that when she was 17 i think and shes gone on to have 2 kids and hasnt had any more problems.

I always thought it would be such a good idea to be able to get a smear while youv still got your legs open after bubs is born! (like 2 minutes after! lol) because then the dignity wouldnt matter!! mine always seems to come back after 2 months! lol

I havnt had one since i was 17!!! so waaaaaaaaayyyyy overdue!!!!!!

Someone once said to me "it doesnt matter because the nurse has seen 100 other muffs that day" but my thoughts are "but did those 100 other muffs look like mine!? lol she might judge my muff!! lol"

Do you reckon the nurse will be thinking "gez thats hairy!!! or OMG why does she have a 'clear canvas' (as DH and i put it!)".........

I'm going to jump on Emma's bandwagon too. I've had to have yearly smears since I started having them 9 years ago, due to pre-cancerous cells, and had to have treatment which now makes my cervix look funny (I got to watch on the TV screen see) and could interfere with labour/birth (they have cut part of it out). I'm now on yearly smears (my last follow up 6 monthly one is in November, yay!!!) for the rest of my life or until I turn 76, whichever comes first. For the pain and worry I had to go through when I was having treatment, the actual smear was a piece of cake, it's more uncomfortable lying there showing your bits off!!!

If you go to your local Family Planning, it's usually free if you're under 22 or if you have a Community Services Card, but that's not the ThinPrep test, it's just the normal one. I've only ever had normal ones and never had to go back because it wasn't clear.

I am in Emma's bandwagon here too. My family (all the females on my mums side of the family) all have had cervix issues. I now have to have smears every 2 years (if I am lucky at my next one it will be 2 years again) due to the family history. When I got my first one at 17 it was abnomal and meant I needed to have them every 6 months till I went to the hospital and had to have colposcopies every 3 months.

So glad you have booked to Sheena, hope the rest of you do as well soon.

Yeah when I had mastitis the doctor got the nurse to come in while he did the exam. I felt better about getitng my boobs out with a nurse present.

The nurse is doing my smear test aswell. I dont want a male doctor looking up my jacksey lol

My doc is male but when I needed the pelvic exam my doc offered for me to see a female doc at the same surgery if I preferred so I did that. For just a smear though you can see one of the nurses, they normally are better at them anyway as they do more.
If the male doc does do anything like that they have to get a nurse in with them anyway. I saw my doc several times for mastitis and each time one of the nurses had to be there for the exam.

Do you have to your usual Dr to do it? DH wasnt to comfortable with another male looking 'down there'. I think it would be a whole lot easier getting a female to do it.

Generally, they won't do smears while you are preggers, so it would be deferred until after the birth. I'm guessing a couple/few months won't make too much difference, and then they'll schedule you onto a 3-yearly smear. Definitely ask the nurse though...I guess what could happen is that you end up having to have 3 one-yearly smears. Pure speculation though!

If its been longer than 3 years since your last smear u need to have another a year later,..I put mine off so long that I have to go back,..what a bugger!!
For the standard one you normally pay a fee for the nurse or a dr's fee if u want them to do it. I prefer the nurse cos they usually do more at most bigger GP's surgeries anyway.

Mine costs $25 (why do we have to pay for something we don't like being done? It's nearly as bad as handing over $$$ for getting plucking/waxing done!) anyway that's a set fee with the nurse and I would have thought it was the cost of the speculum. Ugh... speculum...

I was told on the phone this morning that the standard one is $24 and the thinprep is $45, Im gonna go with the $45 one...

At least if I do it now, I hopefully wont need another one for a few years and I can relax a bit knowing I have had it done!

I think the 'standard' smear is free (although that probably depends on your GP and if you are enrolled in a PHO etc) and the thin prep smear costs. That has been my experience anyway. Apparently the thin prep smear has a lower error rate involved with the collection/processing/analysis, so you are less likely to need a repeat smear if it comes back inconclusive. (I think that's the situation anyway).

and yes, it's very important to go! and it's nothing compared to the prodding involved with childbirth!

Yeah it was always a nurse that did them for me in the UK but out here a doc did one whilst I was seeing her for something else just because it happened to come up that I was due for one and then the last one I had the doc was doing a pelvic exam and swabs to check for infection because I had problems with my period since having Spencer, I wasn't due the smear for another year but again thought may as well have it done at the same time as the other swabs.

Personally I think all the things people waste money on that $45 for a smear or the doc/nurse fee is money well spent. Would be good if it was totally free though.

Yeah they are but smears still have to be paid for by all women. Its not right they are both equally as important but by doing this they are making it seem like one is more important than the other.

I getbthe nurse to do mine, its cheaper than getting the dr to do it and they probably do more than the dr anyway. The only time a dr did it he didn't get enough cells and it had to be redone

ok ladies i have to confess i have never been for one either and yes i know i should go honestly its on my to do list. One thing that really irks me about them though is that they are not FREE when a mammogram is go figure with them being so important you would think that they would both be free.
Cost really depends on how much it costs at your doctors i think its cheaper if you have a commuinty services card.

My old nurse in the UK made me feel really 'special' at one smear when she told me I should I go in the guinness book of records for having the most smears under 25 years of age! I wasn't aware that I'd had any more than anyone else!

My mum that stopped me being embarrassed about them. She said to me " No matter how you feel, just remember the nurse doing the smear has already done a 100 other smears that day. Why is yours any different? It's just a job to her - like a cafe worker handing over yet another cup of coffee'

The thinprep smears are new and apparently they're more senstive they cost $45 but if you go for the old smear test it's still free (just the cost of your md appt).

That's odd, I have had two smears since being in NZ and I haven't paid for either. Each time the doc did it and I just paid for the doc visit.

I booked it!
Im having it done on Wednesday 5th at 8.30am. She said the ThinPrep one is $45 so i think I'll go with that, and I will just explain to her that I am scared and have never had one before.

I would get it done sooner, but I have to wait for payday see! lol

Liz- I have procrastinated(sp?) about having one for years! and its only since having caden that I have really told myself that I need to have it done. He needs his mummy

So yeah, Im REALLY not looking forward to it, and you'd think after having SO many internals done while in labour a smear would seem easy, but when your in labour you dont give a hoot, but when your fully aware of whats going on I think thats wherew the dignity come back into play lol

The worst thing about my last smear was that I took Michaela with me and I could hear her destroying the doctors office but I was on the otherside of the curtain with the docs hands between my legs so there was nothing I could do about it.

A good doctor will make you feel comfortable and chat (about something totally OT) while she does it and before you know it the smear's over and you didn't notice a thing.

Honestly, you'll wonder what all the fuss was about.
I make a big song and dance about it before I go, but only because it's so darn undignified
Mind you, the last one I got was much better - the nurse had me lie on my side with my knees pulled up to my chest, rather than on my back, knees akimbo. Felt much more dignified!

There's virtually no pain, maybe a little pinch - depends on who's administering it, and it's very quick.
If they offer you the ThinPrep smear, and if you can afford it ($53 without a community services card where I go), do it. It gives a much clearer sample, so you're assured of a much more accurate result.

Anyway. That's my long-winded way of saying;
do it, please If I could be there to hold you hand, I would.

Yeah I just got a letter in the mail telling me I am due for one. I had my first one done when I found out I was pregnant with Maddi and it reallt wasnt as bad as I thought. Still freaks me out. Doesnt help that I hate having to use the telephone.

Does it make any difference if you havent had a cycle yet?

You shouldn't have one within 3 weeks of having a baby but looking at your tickers, now would be the perfect time!

It's far more awkward (if you are the shy type) than uncomfortable. It'll be done before you know it. Book it only a day in advance so you don't have to think about it much!

The reason I always try to encourage (or force lol!) my friends to keep their smears up to date is coz my mum had cervical cancer picked up at 35 and had a full hysterectomy at 36. Had it not been picked up so early she might have been looking at chemo, radiation etc. and the outcome might not have been so positive.

gah i just had my first one last week, ive put it off for ages aswell but my mw said when i was pg to get it done soon after birth not during coz your cervix is all different. but its not that bad. i got mine done a week before AF i didnt know it was best for after.

I was told by family plannimg to have it 3-5 days after the end of AF. But I asked at our Dr's surgery and they said whenever. I still went just after AF had finished.
Its not too bad. If u think it would help, get them to explain what they are gonna do. Or likewise, if the thought of knowing what they gonna do freaks u out, tell them u dont wanna know!
