It was pretty extreme but it did mean I didn't have to listen to her cry or constantly carry her around with me. She is now the best sleeper I know! She sleeps in a big girl bed- 3 hours every afternoon and 7pm-7:30am no fuss.

There are other people from my antenatal coffee group who did similar things though and are still having real sleep issues with their kids. I know one couple who have their 2 year old sleeping in her pram next to their bed and they move it with their foot to keep her asleep all night!!!!

    Author: Kelpa
Subject: 2213
Posted: 22 April 2006 at 10:23pm

With my daughter Paige I spent the day at Plunket and it was made very clear to me that "babies" need to be shown the right way from the day dot!! They do not come into this world with "preferences" - we allow them to!!!

I spent the day there and they set up a routine which was great. Paige was 3 weeks old.

Generally you get them up, fed, burped, nappies off for a nude kick, changed, wrapped up firmly then back to bed. And if they cry for 15 minutes it is not a problem as they have had every little thing attended too. This is recommended to be completed and take no longer then an hour - and hour and a half!! And should be like that til they are three months.

I had a major problem letting Paige cry but after a few days I realised it was worth it. She fed better, was really alert and I have a had a dream child with no problems ever since at bedtime - no matter where she sleeps. And she is nearly 7 and loves her bed!!!

Hang in there and perservere....what you do now will set up the next precious years for baby and you!

With both our kids we wrapped them and also gave them a dummy. I'd hold off on the dummy though if you can because Alex who is now 4 months is a real fussy eater...and I'm sure its because he wants the dummy more than the bottle.

Have you got the cot made up so she is near the bottom as opposed to up the top?

With Alex, if he doesn't settle I rub his chest very gently and that calms him down...as he settles I reduce the pressure on his chest until my hand is off completely. Works most of the time. Of course, they do get overtired and then the sleep video is good to A) read the signs so they don't get overtired and B) what to do when they do get overtired.
