Lucas has been given antihistamine and she checked his tonsils while we were there and they're clear now ...she reckons the 2.5 doses could have cleared it ....if thats the case, why did they prescribe it for 10 days? lmao

This isn't even half as bad as last night, not even close. He looked like freddy crugar, only bumpier You'd think that after 12+ hours it wouldn't still be lingering ...its like musical spots, where will they appear next?

I got some photos just now, it appears to be lingering ...and the rash will come up on certain areas and then disappear again within minutes ...hes itching like crazy! We've got an appointment at 9.45am .....as horrible as this sounds, i hope it lingers so they can see it for themselves.



He gets patches like this cropping up anywher and everywhere ...so random! Last night he was absolutely covered in redness and little welts like on his leg above

Hi Steph,

Benjy had the same reaction a few months back to Amoxycillan.
After 2 doses he came up in hives which started out as small patches around his body, we thought it was flea bites and didn't think much of it as he was still happy as larry.
They seemed to fade after a little while and I gave him his next dose. That was when we realised it was an allergic reaction.
Within 30 mins he was covered in hives, by the time we got to A & E he was looking quite puffy too.
They gave him an anti-histamine and he was all good again by morning.
They said he should only have sulphur based antibiotics from now on.
I'd be heading back to the docs to switch antibiotics if I were you.

And just checked the bottle, it IS the amoxycillin that is listed at the bottom of the article as one of the meds that is 'under scrutiny'

Renee you've brought up a good point, i too remember that being covered on the news and i just googled ....i found this article and this paragraph stuck out like a sore thumb:

A lower-dose formulation of amoxicillin syrup was not affected. It was the one more likely to be given to babies and toddlers, Dr Bloomfield said. Amoxicillin use had side-effects, including a rash, but there had been no reported increase in side-effects.

Very strange rash, it's clearing as fast as it came? No sign of it on his feet and legs now ...and his face is no longer red and bumps are slowly deflating? (for want of a better word) ...his breathing is absolutely fine and he was running around laughing about 10 mins ago, totally unphased by it

i've got him in just a singlet as im keeping an eye on his skin, he's settling down to sleep as we speak ....talk about weird!

I am allergic to Amoxicillin, and had the exact same reaction as Lucas is having. Take him to the docs straight away.     

I didn't think they were giving amoxicillin anymore, I saw it on the news a little while ago that they were giving all children different antibiotics now. Sam has been on antibiotics four times in the last couple of months and they never give him that one anymore, it's always that vile flucloxicillin.

I'd definitely go to the doc right now. Depending on how serious his reaction is it could potentially get worse and he may need an adrenalin shot to stop him going into shock.

I don't give it to Andrew or Josh, nor do I take it as I get thrush from it.

I would watch him very closely and if he starts having any breathing problems ring an ambulance
According to pharmacy book i have: itches and hives are a rare reaction to this drug you should stop and consult gp other reactions can be: severe diahorrea, jaundice - yellow colouring. also vomiting

Steph, if it was me I'd be heading to the after hours. Sounds very strange that he is reacting to it like that....best to get him checked out.

I can't have Amoxil and I don't let my doctors give the kids it either. Lucas is turning red with white hives all over ...he's only had 2.5 doses (5mls) of the stuff, last being at dinner time and the rash started on his feet and now is all around the sides of his face ...should I be concerned that it will worsen or lead to anaphylaxis or just leave him as is and ring the Dr tomorrow to have the AB's changed.

For some reason I'd thought we'd already had this stuff before (when he had conjunctivitis as a newborn) but I looked in his well child book and realised it was Eurythymicyn.
