Yay another person who is choosing the orthopaedic mattress hehehe!
I honestly have no idea if it really is a "better" mattress but I like to think it is after the price of it!!
Oh & those Dr Sprott cover things? I dunno if it ever helped protect against SIDS but it did a very good job of keeping the mattress clean from "accidents" with Alex. Still looks brand spanking new anyway

I agree with Nikki, if your child is jumping around and falling out of a cot its time for a bed. I'll say!! We went into Farmers tonight and were poking the inner sprungs and I must admit some of them were very bouncy!!!!

The orthepedic (sp?) ones weren't that bouncy though so that seemed ok. Next to play with will be the foam ones!

Thought I'd revive this one...not meaning to freak out those with inner-sprung but I've heard that inner sprung can be a hazzard when bubs in old enough to stand...and bounce and that there have been cases of toddlers bouncing out of cots or bouncing and smaking heaps on the side.

Then I've also heard that foam can cause cot death if it forms to the babies face if they get over on thier tummy...though surely when they are old enough to sleep like that they are old enough to turn themselves back?

I have a foam mattress because they are ,much easier to dry and take less time to dry if baby has an accident, on it i have a dri-cot and a cloth nappy on top of that, then the bottom sheet. If you do decide for foam make sure it has a cloth cover on it. Well Arna has been attached to "sheepy" since she was born so uh-oh! Never used plastic though but wil either use a "wet/dry" blanket (of they work!) or plastic when arna starts toilet training (monday is the day!)

OMG lmao I fail on all accounts, Nikki I'm worse than you! hehe

1) We have a second hand mattress which came with the cot we got in the trade and exchange (had only been used by one child though, and was in good nick)

2) We didn't use a plastic cover

3) We use a sheepskin as it's good for the freezing winter weather! I'm going to be putting it back on again soon..

I will however be getting a plastic sheet for when Ella starts toilet training.

Oh yeah, and they recommend no sheepskins on cots as well. According to the Dr Sprott website, one of the reasons NZ and Australia have such a high cot death rate is because of the high use of woollen sheepskins/underlays... Apparently, there have been no cases of cot death on any kind of mattress that has the plastic wrapping with only a sheet over it. we had foam for both girls, but got new matresses for each girl. we have a portacot which is different shaped to a normal cot in that it is shorter - so we got cot sized ones and undid the cover, cut off the xtra length, and resewed the cover up again - cos portacot matresses and just so thin!

Ryan has a innersprung mattress and Katelyn's is foam and to be honest i haven't noticed any difference. Nothing wrong with just a foam mattress. But I personally would get an inner-sprung one.
OR you could do the whole hog & get a special "orthopaedic" mattress
Lol sorry! Just had to put that in to be cheeky. When I went looking for a cot my Uncle said he would buy it so off we went shopping, found a lovely cot & then my Uncle made the shop attendant pull out ALL the different types of mattresses (I think there were 4 types) so he could try them out. After he lay down on all of them he chose the orthopaedic one coz apparently it was the most comfy. The price tag on it was $180 though so its NOT a cheap option. I was planning on using it on my boy's bed because his cot breaks down into a bed but since I'm having another baby that idea went out the window.

We got Innersprung, mainly because a friend at work had twins, brought 2 cots 2nd hand then brought mattress's and the cots were an "american" and a "standard" so one of the matress's didn't fit so she gave it to us!
We wouldv'e brought a innersprung I THINK if we had to, mainly because Arna's cot is the one that can be a couch and a bed too so will have lots of wear... but then a foam will be ok to...

Maya had a foam one because they were so much cheaper and it was fine. Innersprung is ment to be better, but as long as its a new mattress (whatever type) I dont think you can go wrong.
