Can we buy a universal car seat that we'd be able to use in a taxi?

It also crossed my mind that I'm not entirely sure how we'd get back from the hospital after giving birth! Likewise, when we moved to Auckland, we chose a suburb that had plenty of local amenities and wasn't to far from the city. I love where we live and the only time I feel like a car would be handy, is for the occasional day trip to places we haven't seen before. Oddly, we very rarely use taxis. I think I've been in a taxi about 4 times in 2 years! I always say though, that because we don't have the expense of a car, we shouldn't feel guilty if we want to use a taxi. We just never seem to need to.

If a friend offers to take me somewhere (that they happen to be going to) though, like the garden centre, I'll always say yes...and buy them coffee and cake, so everyone wins! LOL

On to prams. I've always wanted a Silver Cross coach pram (like my mum had) but I can't find any stockist in NZ, which is a real shame.

Milliemoo

Author: mamanee
Subject: 22335
Posted: 09 November 2008 at 7:35pm

I don't drive, never have I don't think I ever will. My mum has never driven and she brought up two kids without ever needing to drive. Granted, my parents were together until I was 16 and my father drives, but we were a one car family with dad working away all the time.

Now, onto me, I don't drive and I have an 18 month old son. I live in Hamilton and I bought my buggy with the intention of catching the bus regularly so I shopped accordingly. In regards to say grocery shopping, I just shop when I need to and buy enough to be able to carry home either in the tray under the buggy or in shopping bags. Because I have never driven I usually tend to live closer to amenities like doctors, supermarkets, parks and things like that so I don't feel like I am missing out.

I am on my own at the moment and have been a solo parent for a little while (my sons father and I are back together but he is working in Australia) so no use of a car there either.

Occasionally friends will take me shopping if need be, but I don't like to ask because I feel like I can be independent without driving.

My mum is one of the most independent people I know and she has been through her life just fine without driving and doesn't have to rely on anybody else.

I have no doubt that a car would be a handy thing to have and be able to utilise every now and again, but the expense (for us) just doesn't stack up.

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone else who doesn't drive and how they've found it with a child/children. I appreciate it really depends on where you live as to whether you can survive without a car, which again limits the amount of people who might be in a similar situation to us.

Looking forward to your thoughts

Milliemoo
