If I express after a feed, I get about 10-20ml. If I express without feeding (eg when Daniel was NG fed), then I'd get up to 125ml. Your boobs sound like they're working fine - everyone is different. I know some people who are prolific producers and others who have good supply, but just can't get more off when they express. In terms of building your supply, one of the things you're aiming to do is stimulate your nipples (ie milk is not the beall and endall), so you're doing well. Remember the baby is the best expressor and they will always get more off than a machine will.

    Author: KiwiL
Subject: 22466
Posted: 14 November 2008 at 12:11pm

Hi guys,

I have a question about expressing, because it sounds like it doesn't work too well for me!

When I express, I can generate my let down very quickly. My milk then flows really fast and well, but then stops after 20 - 40ml.

From the sounds of it, once let down has occurred, shouldn't your milk keep flowing until the breast is empty? This definately doesn't happen, as if I put DS on the breast, he can always get more milk.

Sometimes, if I continue to pump, I can generate another "quick flow", but again of only about 20 - 40ml.

Is this normal? And, if not, why don't my boobies work properly?!?!?

ETA: I am using an Avent Electric pump and am currently trying to increase my supply some.

Edited by kiwilaurie
