We just did a round trip to Dunedin (2 x 2.5hrs) and I put some toys and books in a bag for Tom and every now and again I pulled out something new to give him.  also pack 3x as much food as he would normally eat and keep feeding him.  Tom seems to want a lot more than normal when in the car so at home he would have one vegemite sandwich, in the car he'd want at least 2....little piggy. 

 

This time I also took Teddy and a blanket and when it was nap time gave him teddy (wow! what a smile) and put his blanket over him....he slept for 1.5 hrs!!

When are you heading away?? My in laws have the high chair that attachs to the table that you could probably borrow if you want to.

Are you going to Waihi township or Waihi Beach?
I first went there for a holiday when I was 18 months old, Waihi Beach has every amenity. The surf club usually has things on, there is a big family fun day on New Years Day, with races for each age group etc. Free ice creams etc.

Both the grandparents have portacots so we will just steal one from them but I don't know how well that will go down with Daniel as he's refusing to sleep in his cot at the moment.

That beach tent looks cool. I might get my aunty to get it for me. At least that way I'll only pay about $10 for it instead of $35

Try and time the drive with his nap, so hopefully he'll crash out in the car. I'd probably stop somewhere for lunch, nappy change etc... not sure which way you are coming up, Tirau has some nice cafes. Or if you go the other way you could always stop in Rotorua.

Portacot?

Do you have a beach tent for the beach? Ezibuy sell them, they were a life saver when we took the kids to Whangamata.

We drove from Wellington to Warkworth last Christmas (over 2 days) and Amy was about the same age as Daniel. One of the best things was a travel size magadoodle as she was really starting to get into drawing. I also found that to have a couple of bags of toys to pass back to her at different stages of the journey was good. Each pack had a small book, toy and treat. The books and toys had been hidden away for a week or two so they were a surprise .

I would recommend a travel high chair. We have one that packs smaller than a laptop and weights nothing. It has an inflatable seat and attaches to just about any chair.

Look at the clothes and toys that you are going to take for Daniel and put half of them back - I always find that you never use half of the stuff!!

Ohhh - you will love it! It's such a beautiful part of the country. Sand + water = great entertainment for kids. Here's some of the things we used to do.

1. Martha Mine - Waihi
2. Steam Train ride - Waihi (did it every year without fail)
3. Bird Park (somewhere around Waihi)
4. Walk around Mt Maunganui (don't go near the Mt around New Years though)
5. Heaps of great nature walks
6. Heaps of vege stalls on the side of the road
7. Great beaches, cafes and restaurants

I'm so jealous now. We spent years going to Omokoroa as my DH had family there, then about five years in Rotorua as the kids got bigger and this year we're heading to Whakatane. I love, love, love that my kids have great family holiday memories like I had as a kid.

Yeah I'm definitely going to go get some cheap sand toys from Mitre 10 mega since they are on special at the mo. Makes a nice cheap xmas pressy for him.

I didn't know about the steam train trip. I'll have to investigate that. I have no idea what is up that way as I've never been. Just remembered something else. Don't know if you can still get them but we also used a portable highchair seat that clips on to a table.

We also used to take a supply of favourite toys for the car journey and for where we were staying. If you're spending lots of time at the beach I would definitely have a bucket and spade, watering can and ball - he'll get hours of fun from that.

We used to stay at Omokoroa which is half way between Tauranga and Waihi in the Tauranga harbour. Really beautiful spot to visit as there's grass with trees shading over the sand and the water is shallow for ages. the motorcamp has great hot pools that you can pay to use. There's also a steam train trip through a gorge by Waihi - a real must for kids and adults.

I'm not going to be much help but when our kids were little we used to travel at night - leaving about 6-7pm so they would sleep most of the way. Otherwise I found it easier to sit in the back to entertain them.

Our first holiday with our eldest the station wagon was loaded up to the max (couldn't see out the back window). By the time we were going away with three we minimised what we took.

Can you feed him in the pushchair or hire a highchair up there?

We are going to Waihi for xmas/new years and I'm thinking ahead of what we will need to take with us.

We are staying at a bach which makes things a bit more easy as we will have a bedroom etc.

What do I need to take with me or what can I get away with not taking? We haven't really been anywhere with him and I don't want to forget anything or try and fit things into the car we don't need.

I'm also trying to think of things in advance in case I need to buy them. I've just purchased a new rash top with SPF of 50 I think so Daniel has a bit of protection at the beach. I'm also wondering about the high chair. Daniel is horrible to eat without it, but I don't want to try and fit a high chair in the car I'm also going to have to buy some sposies *pouts* because I don't want to be washing nappies on holiday lol

And how do you keep a toddler entertained on a 5hr car journey??
