My grandmother, amnd ,y parents gave u s SOOOOOOmuch for our kids. We were given a cot, stroller, clothes galore, nappies...tons of stuff. My parents bought the cot, carseat, change table and high chair at the Baby Factory for $750 all up, plus I bought the pram ($200) and a breast pump ($100) which were the only 'big' spends when I had Maya. I laybyed all the blankets and basics like flannels, towels etc. at Kmart during their 15% off sales and just paid them off.

We did everything as cheap as we possibly could for Maya tho because we had noooo money (she was very unplanned and I was still at uni). We got heaps and heaps bought for us! She was the first grandchild on my side so has been spoilt rotten since the moment they found out I was pregnant. Mum basically spent about 2 grand, Dad about the same and us about the same too. We didn't have to do it that way but at the time it seemed like the only way! Go for the house- and that 'living on one income thing' is such a great idea! OMG 5grand. Woah. ummm ill just do a bit of a mental calc. Id say we prob spent about 1500 but that was for really expensive cot and triton trekker, and nice bassinette that both my kids only stayed in for a very short time. you can def do it much cheaper. I think the thing that saved me heaps of money was that i only brought second hand clothes. Our budget was roughly the same as Jess's and we've managed to get EVERYTHING lol and then some, but yeah, a lot was gifted too. Yeah we are doing an experiment from my next pay. All my pay will be transferred into our savings account and we are going to live off DH's income. I spent very little on Hannah when she was born... but it is the ongoing costs that make a child expensive!! Coffee groups every second day... Creche... School (uniforms, stationery, "Mum can I buy my lunch today?" etc)... and if you have a boy... food!!! hehehe

People think it is a HUGE cost setting up for a kid... it can be if you want it to (I'd have loved to have all new stuff!!) but doesn't have to be. So anyway... go for the bigger house and worry about the other stuff as you go

Hey Kebakat ...

I guess, the sky is the limit, which is what I discovered when I made a list of things I'd need! Have a look at the layette list on the Baby Factory website - it's a really good guide I think of everything you need.   What the husband and I did/are doing too is putting something aside every 'pay day' or so, so that the financial pressure if off when we do get pregnant. That was too, you can keep an eye out on sales etc We're still TTC and now, have everything we need, and we've done it by using unexpected money (eg. if the husband does some overtime), and by spending on baby stuff when we've had a light bills month.

I think you can pretty much expect to pay about $5,000 or so for standard essentials eg. cot, car seat, high chair, buggy, monitor, linen, etc etc (the things on the layette list anyway) I think! You can also look for second hand stuff if you prefer to keep costs nice and low too. Also, don't forget that there are things you don't need immediately - eg. you can buy a crib, but won't need the cot for a couple of months until after baby is born (but I think the best way to do it, if you can, is buy is BEFORE you're on a single income!)

DH and I are considering buying a new house. Yay! We have a small 2 bedroom one that we have outgrown already and we looked at if we could afford to upgrade to a 3 or 4 bedroom place and we can easily even only using DH's income and not including mine so we are going to sit on the idea for a couple of days and if we are still really excited about it we are gonna do a couple of things to our house and then put it on the market. It's really the only big thing stopping us from ttc.

And I am getting to the point of this question.. slowly. DH asked me last night generally how much do you need to spend (first child) for getting all the essentials for a baby? We are both clueless and out of our depth for this.
