Better safe than sorry we thought so we got one. ^^ I used a woollen underlay on DD's cot. Over a normal cotton mattress protector.

What an interesting topic! I am a first time mum so have no ideas, we brought a innersprung mattress made of only natural materials. We then brought a mattress protector but didn't think it would be good to use as it isn't natural and what is the point of buying a natural mattress and then putting an unnatural cover on it.

Trademe have natural mattress protectors made of wool but we decided to use an old wollen blanket that has been shrunk by washing and putting in the dryer (our antenatal lady recommended this)....

Am instested to see if anyone else used a natural protector or a woolen blanket. We personally felt safer having the mattress cover, we got a new inner sprung mattress aswell but its to do with dust and stuff in mattress that is linked with cot death, even if it is aried out dust will still collect up in it..

I've got one for my bub too. Don't you have to be very careful of the type of bedding you use as otherwise it is not effective? I used one on DD basinette as we had the mattress from my nephew (basinette is over 40 years old and I couldnt get a knew mattress to fit otherwise I would have got a new one). I've bought I new mattress for this time (different basinette), so not sure if I'll use one or not.

I found it slightly crinkly but it didnt bother DD.

We bought one, but never used it as couldnt stand the crinkly noise and feel of the plastic.

I got one. It is a bit crinkly and I'm not sure if the theory behind it all is correct, but me being a first timer I'm probably far more paranoid than necessary. Thats what I thought to yummymummy in regards to pricing.

And like kebakat, our mattress is brand new and will air it out before use (not til April). Oh and its also innersprung as Richtea suggests.

Genie - what you say is basically what I know about them too. But I didn't realise it was mould/bacteria feeding on the chemicals. I just knew it was chemicals coming from the mattress.

Hmmm its such a small price, but I still believe that it will prevent anything, despite their quote. The booklet also said that cot death is caused by the chemcals coming from the mattress....whereas I believe that it can happen anywhere where no mattress is even involved, ie carseat etc.

We have innersprung mattresses but use the Dr Sprott covers too - I saw a doco on them a while back (before Gina was born) and made my mind to use them then. I was given a book "The great cot death coverup" by Jim Sprott which convinced me to cover the mattress. The book is a lot better at explaining the theory but basically its to do with poisonous gases being generated from moulds/bacteria feeding on the chemicals contained in the mattress, chemicals that are used for eg fireproofing. It needs to be certain plastic material, I forget what exactly, it was something or surgical rubber?? I personally don't like them. Everything that we got told stressed natural fibres only in the bed and a plastic cover contradicts that completely so we decided against using one. Plus we had a new matress and made sure it was aired before it was used

Mattress covers in regards to cot death.

Wasn't too sure if I should post in here or in 'first baby' etc.....but if your like me, you hit the Active Topics anyway!

So.......This is my 4th baby.
First baby - brand new mattress, brand new cot
2nd baby - used the mattress from 1st baby
3rd baby - 2nd hand cot, 2nd hand mattress (different cot from first 2 as there was 6yr age gap.

4th baby - brand new mattress, brand new cot.

Anyway......mattress covers were not around when I had #1 and 2...and they were fairly new when #3 came along.
But now it seems to be a little more known. I was given a booklet on cot death at the Baby Factory when I looked at cots. But when I picked it up they didn't say anything. I phoned them today to ask the price of them and they are only $25, and she said they don't ask when you buy the cot as they aren't allowed to promote a product over any other.

So......who has used these covers? They aren't expensive so I'll probably get one. A quote from the booklet was that no cot deaths have been recorded from baby's using the covers....I thought that a bold statement.

So really just want to know what people think of them and their experiences.
