Author: TraceyA
Subject: 22928
Posted: 05 December 2008 at 6:53pm

Macs are safer, you don't get spyware or viruses infecting your computer. They can handle much harder, bulkier programs without crashing the system. You don't get a weekly visit from the "blue screen of death" or bugged constantly to pay for useless upgrades that should have been released with the supposedly finished program.

For photography I use Aperture and Photoshop, both perform together without my iMac trying to kill itself to run them both.

As already mentioned, Macs are simply much more stable then a pc, when you buy something for a mac, you know it's going to work out of the box, no messing around. The warranty that comes with your new mac is actually worth the paper it's written on so you know that if anything does go wrong they aren't going to beat around the bush about fixing it or not.

Mac's have always been considered to be the hardier of the two types of computers and have been used in film and photography since way back in the dark ages of computers. I really wasn't a mac fan though until I got my MacBook Pro and now even more so with my iMac.

As teachers, we were all assigned G3 Mac's when we first got them...then upgraded to G4's... and they have now upgraded to Macbooks. I can not imagine using any other computer... when I went on Maternity leave last year I went straight out and book my own personal Macbook. The features on ilife are fantastic (I tutor people in how to use it and get the most out of it) and I also use imovie, garageband, and idvd to make slideshow and film DVDs for people as keepsakes. Have made loads of them featuring my babies - to give to my family and have also done DVD's for my friends of their weddings. They make amazing gifts and the software is so easy to use. I am a trained editor and will probably upgrade to Final Cut Pro... for some added extras.
I would NEVER go back to a PC!
They are not cheap... My Macbook laptop was over three grand... and I bough some added extras to go with it - including Microsoft Office for Mac, a dot mac account (so you can have your own website etc) and the three year warranty - which I really do think is a must with technology.

But I'm using it for much more complicated things than my little pc gets used for, so its not really a fair comparison. After using a mac for 6 months, I still prefer the PC overall. Lol

We're a mac family and we love them. They're so much more stable than PCs, can handle a lot more data (hence why they're good for photography, you can store loads of high def photos without the risk of crashing the computer). Sure at first it takes a bit of getting used to - we had to use them at uni and at first I absolutley hated them cos I didn't know all the shortcuts etc. But once I learnt that pressing the apple key with the mouse button was the same as right clicking, and that I could actually plug in my regular mouse and it worked with right click, I was away laughing. Macs also don't get viruses.

Anyway yeah I've used imovie lots and it's great. You're welcome to look at the lil movies I've made that are on youtube, I can pm you the link. Pretty much the standard though, some with photos/text or short videos, music in the background and fades etc. It's so fun and easy to use.

There is a PC alternative, Windows MovieMaker. I personally don't think it's as stable or easy to use, but it's there

DH also has a MacBook Pro. I moved to macs because I do photography and he's a software developer. We love them and I couldn't imagine ever going back to a PC now.

I only used iMovie for the first time the other week to make a quick video from my ultrasound and it was great fun. Once I figured out how things worked I thought it was fantastic. I've also used GarageBand to produce my husbands old business podcast and found it super easy.

There are a few little tricks you need to learn and things you need to get used to on a mac that are very different from PC, but once you have it all down you can't understand how you dealt with such a disease stricken, illogical computer when you could have a mac

It's totally awesome. It takes a little bit of getting used to, as it's a little different... but way easier once you get used to it. As Joscia said, everything just makes sense.

We don't really use iMovie either, though... so don't really know about that.
