OMG, OT, I just witnessed a grizzley old geezer coming out of the pub, getting into his van and backing into the car behind him and pushing it back a few metres then driving off. granted it was a tight space but we had moved forwards a bit to give him more room. Bet he was drunk!!! Don't worry i got his rego and found the owner of the other car. I also gave her my details inces she needs me for a witness.

I agree, a lot more work and resources need to go into prevention and education but with the police already stretched as it is we need to look outside the police and into the wider community to assist with youth programmes etc.  The trouble I guess is finding the volunteers.

I must lead a very sheltered life.  It seems so odd to me that people could be anti-police.  It's like people being anti-medics or anti-firefighters

Having said that my dad was a medic and he was attacked a few times by the mate/family of his patient as he tried to treat them.

Some people are just nutters! Those people should be evicted from NZ (you are the weakest link.... goodbye!)

One of my biggest fears of being a policemans wife (apart form DH getting hurt or killed) is that DH will get dragged through the media for doing his job. And I mean doing his job as he should do.   That would suck.

Caitynsgirl - you are so right. Respect seems to have gone out the window these days, not only for the police but for elders, teachers etc etc.   It annoys me how police can be bagged but yes, who do they call when they need help?? Funny isn't it?

Mcploppy -I agree, the media has a huge huge part on how police are portrayed. Some of the stories on there are just so one-sided or edited its not funny.

I just don't know how police do it. They are amazing. I reckon alot of people don't actually realise how varied the role is.

I agree with all the comments
I especially agree with " if they werent doing something wrong in the first place , they wouldnt be chased "
and that police need more protection and support.

In my first hand experience, police don't chase someone for the hell of it, the vehicle has done something to break the law to come to attention anyway. If they hadn't done whatever it was in the first place then they wouldn't be in the situation where the police wanted to stop them. The drivers know exactly what they are doing when they don't stop and if you haven't done any thing wrong why run??

Summerlamb, there is a point where pursuits get called off and a lot of the time it is the pursing officer that will call it off, rather than the Police Comms operator.

I totally agree with what Star & Paws said about support. I think that the group who needs to give the most support and doesn't is the bosses. I think the media has alot to answer to in regards to how the police are portrayed to the public...i know that saying that the police got it right and did a good job does not make for a dramatic news read.

Police need more support/legal protection. It sux that if a policeman (or woman ) shoot, or car hits someone as above, whilst they are in their line of duty, their name usually gets splattered across the media.

I also hate people who think police are revenue gatherers. Don't break the law then! Simple as that! People say that if the police wern't chasing them then they would not have been speeding but then i say that if they had not done something wrong in the first place the police would not have been chasing them. Make sense?
They should be prosecuted for any death caused by their actions.

A tough one when innocent people are involved, but I do agree with your statement. How do you guys feel about police offers being raked across the coals for chasing someone in a car that has refused to stop and they end up in a crash hurting themselves or someone else.

In my opinion people who refuse to stop are in the wrong. They knowingly put themselves and others in danger by using exessive speed to get away from the police who are trying to keep us safe.
