I have never paid much attention to the blue-ness of my boys lips. I can tell if they still have wind by the hardness of their tummies. If they are rock-hard, they have wind but if they are slightly soft and flexible they dont have any. My MIL says that stuff all the time, I find it irritating. It seems to me that whenever she talks about blue around the mouth, it's just remnant breastmilk on baby's lips. I've read that the blue thing is an old wives' tale, but so many people (including Plunket nurses and midwives) still seem to stand by it, so maybe there is some truth in it? ok so I thought I would post a pic so you can see what I am talking about. It looks bluer in bath and I think thats cos its so white and bright in there but you can kinda see the blueness

yeah I asked plunket nurse last week. She said it isn't just an old wives tale and do I notice the colour go down when he burps but to be honest I only ever think about it when he is in the bath cos thats when you can see just how blue they are. I find the same Henna especially lately, J will sometimes burp 2 hours after a feed, even if he has done a real good one after his feed. Just to be a killjoy - have you mentioned the blue lips to your plunket nurse? I know they are rumoured to be a sign of wind (I still remember being told to get out of bed and walk Daniel till it went away, at 2am following the birth from hell ) and many babies just have them for whatever reason, but it can also be a sign of issues with the heart. When I was talking to my LC about it, she said she couldn't understand, physiologically, why they would be blue if windy.

I burp him halfway through each side, and at the end of each side. Probably get a burp 70% of the time. It was definitely true for E ..we never got told it until he was few weeks old..made things much easier!:)

ok so more questions now    I know that each baby will be different but how much wind should they have. I always went by that, was definitely true for my boy. I had no idea how or why to wind a baby lol so mum taught me that wee thing and it definitely helped. I always got confused with that too.

When DS was really wee, we would try to burp him for AGES! Now we know the right way/spot to get him to do it.

My MIL still looks at him and says "oh he has wind" when I know he doesn't.

hey how much stock do you guys put into 'if babies lips are blue around the outside they have wind'?
