I dont get the concept of the plastic covers. Surely mattress protectors do the same thing and they have a nice cushion part on the top.

yeah i'd just air it in the sun for a bit then use a cover. if you're worried about any surface stains, you could try gently spot cleaning them with a cloth dabbed in a water/white vinegar solution before putting it out in the sunlight to bleach/dry/air. When you use those covers, place a wool/cotton blanket or a large folded cotton sheet between it and your fitted sheet. Issy had a second hand innersprung and this bub will have Issys bassinette and hammock (so third hand mattresses)

I would say that bub 2 will have a second hand cot and mattress too.

Good luck. We used a new foam mattress for DD and she was fine with that but I'm going to buy a new inner sprung one this time (i think i'm more paranoid 2nd time round!) I've found a company called Health Protect that use a 4-stage sanitation process (uses UV treatment as one stage) suitable for mattresses and carpets, and they say its very safe for children. And apparently only charge $30 for a cot mattress!

I would think that by the time you pay for it to be cleaned it may not be much more to buy a new one??

Farmers have good specials everynow and again with 30% off nursery items so you could keep an eye out for a new one if you decide not to keep the old that is.

All the books I've read so far say you should get a new mattress for each child! Though that sounds a little OTT to me. I think if it looks to be in good nick, if you left it in the sun to kill any nasties and aired it out heaps, I'd probably be OK with using it. We have a second hand mattress with a plastic cover over and it seems to be fine. With all 3 of my kids they have had second hand mattresses and there were no problems at all... I don't think we even aired it out.

If in doubt keep it for later as having a spare could come in handy. Getting a new one is the healthiest option.

I the sids thing was to do with the release of chemicals in older/second hand mattresses? That's what those poly covers are for.

I got an innersprung mattress included when I got my second hand cot, which is in really good condition. Am planning on investigating cleaning companies to see if they can remove all the likely nasties.. does anyone know anything about this or which companies may be good to contact?
