Author: TraceyA
Subject: 23315
Posted: 24 December 2008 at 5:09pm

The main problem with fish & shellfish comes from the amount of mercury in the fish. The bigger the fish, more deep sea it is means the more mercury it has (because they eat the smaller things and thus get a higher build of mercury from swimming around on their own plus that accumulated by the smaller ones).

The average suggestion is that it's safe to have something like Tuna, Halibut or Snapper once a week but not more often then that. You can have up to 2 serves a week of shellfish (prawns, scallops etc), salmon, cod, catfish and that sort of thing.

Don't eat anything from Asia as they have huge levels of mercury - only eat NZ seafood really, it's your safest bet across the board.

Fresh water is the safest bet.

And take it from someone that has been dealing with Mercury poisoning for a few years, it's not something you want to dismiss as trivial, it really sucks!
