Its NOT standard - my midwife wasn't even going to send me till I said my father has Diabetes (I don't have the other risk factors) in the end I ended up with GD... it can result in a bigger baby but if you are careful and stick to the right foods etc... you might not have big baby - Rhylz was big (9lb4oz a week early) but I also have a history of big babys (and was tested for GD with the other 2 as well and didn;t have it) so they weren't worried.

oh and the GD test is normal at 28 weeks

Its not just the POAS that will determine if you need to have the diabetes test. That POAS is looking at other things also.

I didn't find the test horrible, infact I liked the lime drink. Just ask for them to have a cold one ready when you book the test. Ty's Mummy- is it possible you just have a quiet bubba who didn't want to be seen? They seem to get themselves all curled up in all sorts of weird positions at times which must make it hard for the sonographer monitor everything.

Our bubba didn't look squished at the 20 week scan but we didn't get a great look at her face either as she was facing inwards lol. I did notice the sonographer didn't do a CRL though like last time so I don't even know if we have a big or small bubba!  I think her weight at just under 20 wks was about 345gm which according to my pg books is on the higher side and she also had long legs so perhaps we do have a giant growing in there!  

Re the gestational diabeties- my mw also has yet to tell me about that drink thing...it sounds awful ...but she does get me to poas every time and let her know if it changes colour...which it hasn't (fingers crossed it won't).

It is a little scarey how different each midwife is. Mine is at 28 weeks! I do the pee test every visit though, so I guess if that came back positive she would have sent me early.

I reckon bubs was in a funny position like cuppatea said, mine has all the room in the world but still likes to curl up behind the placenta or right down against my pelvis.. The diabetes is standard as lilfatty said...usually between 22 - 24 weeks. I was checked at 10 weeks and do have gestational diabetes, am now on insulin.

The drink is not as bad as what it was 16 years ago. Back then it was thick gooey stuff like wallpaper paste. Now its a fizzy lime drink and is quite nice when they give you a cold one.

They normally do the diabetes test as a standard thing as it's possible to get gestational diabetes (being over weight is a risk factor as is a family history of diabetes but some women get it without any risk factors). I had my test at around 24 weeks. Funnily enough though I was never tested with my first, I was under a different midwife that time and don't know why I wasn't tested as it seems as though it is a routine test for all women.

I'm sure if anything has been picked up on the scan about the size of baby or the room that was a concern the sonographer/radiologist would have said something.

It's also quite common to have to go back for a second scan we nearly had to this time as he had his arm across his heart which meant that they couldn't take the images they needed to, but eventually we were able to get him to move. He had also tucked himself right into my hip so looked squished even though he could have moved if he had wanted to. From what i understand the babies of mothers with gestational diabetes can have a much larger baby due to the high blood sugar levels if not monitored.

yah thats what i thought but im comparing the two and the second time is weird..........doesnt help that im not fully healed after the first and my midwife is away for another week

I had to go back for a second look at the heart and face cos bubs was hiding.

There should be plenty of room in there still hun, might not look it but I am sure your little one is still swimming around. I thought ours looked all squished in too.

So cool you get to see bubs again so soon, I was pretty happy about that!
