Sophie was similar - if we took her off to burp them she didn't want to go back on, she would get so cross . Some babies are a lot happier if you let them take the lead woth when to stop. There was a tread on this a while ago ... I will see if I can dig it up.

If I remember correctly, you burp him after every 50mls and then it is difficult to get him back on?
Now i know wind issues are not much fun but have you tried (of course you have but just incase) not taking him off to burp until he lets you know he is finnished ? Sophia no longer has a burp stop because the milk is slightly cooler and will not take it again and she also thinks, Oh i am no longer "starving" so I do not need to take more. Her burps rattle the windows and she spills a bit but i find it better than you not drinking.
I discovered this system when we had issues when she was 10 wks old and we were changing from breast to bottle and she refused to feed more than 50mls (burping stop)

Yep. He is definately better on a faster flow teat, but I don't think we could go any faster than we are already. He likes the bottles warm too! Won't drink it cool - we have to rewarm a couple of times during a feed.

Crazy thing is, after the initial go we have to jam the bottle in his mouth, wrestling with him. Sometimes just a tiny taste and he will start drinking again, other times he definately doesn't want it. Surely that is not normal?!?

It's great having everyone's support here. I am offering bottle after breast feeding every time, which is what the doc wants me to do. So far, he has not taken it at all.

He will take the bottle when he is hungry and have a good guzzle, taking about 80mls. After 80mls he will either slowly drink to about 140mls or, if it is a bad day, flat refuse to have anymore. On a really bad day he will only drink 50ml from a bottle. Hardly sustainable!!

And so far he has refused formula - spits it out and cries his heart out.

As for the plan of offering bottle after each feed, I doubt he will ever take it. On a good day, he is just going to spend longer at the breast and fill up there. On a bad day, when he rejects the breast he will always reject the bottle as well. Our problem is finding out WHY he rejects food... the solution is not just to offer more food... it's not going to change the problem.

Maybe he will prove me wrong? Will give it a week before I get the doctor to think up another option.

Somehow I feel the only way to get help is to put him on 100% bottle so I can say "Look - he's only drinking 80ml per feed, when he should be having 150ml at the very least." Otherwise I just get the old "well, maybe he is just efficient" argument when I KNOW that is not what is happening here.

I wish it were as simple as him doing well on the bottle. If that were the case I would change in a heartbeat.

Does he seem better with having the bottle after a BF? Are you using EBM or formula(sorry I cant remember).
Does he drink better from the bottle, like will be polish off 150mls easily and happily with the bottle?\

Yeah, I know you guys are right. However I find myself getting frustrated with Jackson when he won't eat.

I know he is not doing it to be difficult - there is obviously something causing him some sort of discomfort and because I feel antsy, it feels like I am not close with him.

A good portion of my day is spent encouraging him to latch/suck/lie still etc that it does detract from just being with him.

Laurie, do not fret about not having a bond with jackson. I am sure your bond is great and even if you switch to using a bottle your time can be just as special.
When I feed sophia she is against my breast and she snuggles down and her heyes are staring into mine the entire time. She alwayls hold my little finger on the hand that holds the bottle and the little monkey has even started using my hand to pull the bottle out, grin at me then push my hand/bottl to her mouth again.
Different but just as special.

Mmm I guess thats true Laurie your doctor is being sensible, maybe Jackson is a bit like Caden on the feeding thing, I could have kept trying and trying and exausted all attempts but the end result was going to be the same. I mean I was pouring out with milk, it would soak my top and pants where it would be dripping out while I tried to latch him on, so it wanst my milk production that was the problem it was that Caden couldnt/ wouldnt stay latched on.
In the end I got myself so stressed out and upset, especially after trying the feeding tube thing that formula was the obvious way to go for us.

My MW was very supportive and it was her support that made me feel better about my choice, she basicly told me Id done so well to BF for 4 weeks with bleeding sore cracked red nipples! I never got a break from the sore nipple thing

The relief was amazing, physically and mentally after Caden went on formula.

In hindsight I would say that getting really anxious and upset about BF is not the way to go, but I so know where you are, I was getting so much conflicting information and being told that things would settle down at 3, 4, 5, 6,,etc weeks. I needed the Plunket nurse to tell me to stop, so maybe that is what you're GP is doing, i felt like i had permission to"give up" Not that it was giving up, but i was so single minded on BF at the time.

Sheena, I think he was more worried about my emotional state and the expectations I put on myself. He reiterated that I had done a good job, but I should choose formula over several hours of expressing every day.

He also prescribes it for it's proper purpose (tummy issues) and feels a large number of his patients have side effects, like headaches.

I think he would have liked to see me go straight to formula, but didn't want to make that call until I have seen a specialist.

Luckily, I trust my doctor 100% and he has been very good with me in the past. I think he is trying to protect me from more upset and worry! Like I said, I know if I had pushed the issue then he would have given it. i had domperidone while the twins were in SCBU because they said I wasn't expressing enough and getting enough milk to feed them both. It worked really well.

But now I find feeding them formula helps, have you tried maybe a bit of formula, and breast also? Aww Laurie, Im sure you have Jackson have great bond, you have done so much for him. He is a lucky wee chap!

Breastfeeding is just one way of bonding, there are SOOO many other better ways to bond with him I found lots of little things.
Formula feeding Caden, made us have a better relationship as mother and son, but that little bit of breastfeeding was a great bonding experience and I realised that after I stopped.

I wonder why your doc wont give domperidone to you, thats odd, if you LC said to get it then that should be good enough for your doctor.....have you tried the milk flow tablets from the health shop?

Thanks Claire.

My doc today basically refused to give me the domperidone. He would have if I had really pushed the point, but he doesn't think it will answer our problems. He thinks it will just create more anxiety, with trying to express all the time. I can see his point.

We've planned to keep breastfeeding and offering a formula top up after every feed until I see the hospital paeds - hopefully for some answers.

I appreciate the time you took to reply and for sharing your personal story.

It's hard, isn't it? Sometimes I feel I haven't bonded well with Jackson because feeding him has been so, so difficult and I have been constantly worried about him. Sorry i tired to answer back straight away but was at work and for some resason the site kept crashing.
I Fed Fay EBM til she was 6 months old at the time when i got fed up and we switched to formula. Fay was born at 35 weeks, I had no milk what soever and she had no latching or sucking reflex, so we had several different problems to you. I persevered with direct BF for 10 weeks and after seeing a speech therapist and LC a really good plunket nurse at the Rongotai plunket centre just suggested i stop putting myself through the wringer and feed EBM. We started on domperidone at 5 days, and it helped at that point in that my milk finally arrived 3 days later. Initallay I was expressing 10 times a day, but over time I was down to 2-3 times by the end and yeilded about 250-300mls a day. I used a medela single pump but would not advise that if you want to do it as it takes nearly an hour a time.
Domperidone made me feel very hungry as it speeds the gut flow up, that's how it works as an anti sickness drug.
and sorry yes titrated means i started on a smaller dose and we increased it until we reached the dose which worked for me, we tried bringing it down a few times but my milk flow stopped and we had to start again until we discovered the dose that helps.
Hope that helps,and just go with what feels right for you. No one else knows the answers to your situation and go with your gut feeling. I think i said earlier that the only person to justify anything to is you and jackson. But giving up BF is a greiving process, acknowledge that and allow yourself to cry for it. I still miss the fact that BF was not the natural loving experience i really wanted it to be, and 2 years on I think I am just about over that. I do feel I was cheated, and I know I didn't bond with Fay initially as I was so stressed about feeding and separation (she was in NICU for 2 weeks)

Thanks Annie. I know it won't help with Jackson's fussiness, but I am hoping if there is always more milk readily available he will drink it. We seem to have the biggest problems when he has to work really hard for it.

Plus, when we have a few bad days, I don't need to panic about my supply.

I used domperidone for the entire time I fed Jacob as I had no milk supply of my own. It worked wonderfully and I cannot reccomend it enough. I really don't think it would effect the hindmilk/foremilk ratio, though, it just helps with production. I fed Fay EBM for 6 months all with the help of Domperidone. Can't tell you about the ratio of foremilk to hindmilk tho. The milk usually separated out to cream on top in the fridge, but I have no idea what is normal. When things settled down I was expressing about 200-300ml a day and topping up with formula as she needed it. I was on 30mg three times a day, titrated up and this was the dose I needed to settle my milk flow.
Have you looked a Jack Newman's site, he is a Canadian Dr who has done heaps of papers on this and most of my research came from him. My MW wokred with him in Canada

Has anyone used this where a baby's intake is poor, and therefore has poor weight gain? My supply used to be great, and although Jackson was fussy, he did put on weight at almost an average amount.

That started to drop off though, and I noticed a decrease in the amount of weight he was gaining (well below average, or the amount to keep him on his curve).

I am wondering if I take Domperidone (my LC has suggested it) that more milk will be available, and because it is easier to get Jackson will drink more. And I realise I may need to continue to express any excess as well.

What I DON'T want to happen is the Domperidone to mean that Jackson takes a greater ratio of foremilk to hindmilk.
