The first time he had some it was like 'finally, you're giving me the good stuff!'

Oh and we started with vege like pumpkin, mixed with formula and then slowly to straight pumpkin. Jack hates the acidity of fruit to this day and would not touch it when first on solids.

It wasn't for any particular reason I was just excited about doing it lol! I'm glad I did though they are fantastic with solids now and they were small babies especially Esme but are now a really healthy weight and Esme is finally catching up to her sister.
You don't give them much to start with anyway I only gave them a teaspoon of baby rice once a day for the first month. So yeah I'm not sure how a baby would gain much more weight from that but it does help them get used to it quicker. I guess every baby is different only you can really decide whats best.

So don't let people scare you into thinking that starting at 4mos is going to be bad for your baby. Besides, about every baby born in the '80's was introduced to solids at 4mos.

The food before 5-6 months is more about a little 'top up' and first tastes. I have not heard about starting solids to try and beef them up!! If he does have reflux might it make it worse?

I am so pleased that your doctor has given you a paed referal. I am not sure what the waiting is in Wellington - when Amy saw one back in 2006 it was a couple of weeks but it was just to check out a birth mark - nothing urgent. Have you done some lurking in the Reflux and Allergy forum?? They may have some advice on how to encourage your wee boy to feel better and drink more.

Jackson exhibits some signs that he would be ready to start. We've tried giving him pears (to see if that would work for giving him his Losec), and he does open his mouth to the spoon.

Did anyone have any success with slow gainers (almost FTT) when they introduced solids?
