I have nothing against people who are named after cities or countries - a friend of mine even called her daughter Indiana. BUT most of those names are pretty acceptable - especially ones like Paris and Kobe, but imagine the treatment that this woman's children are going to get at school. ahem ahem ahem..... can't comment here really, but can say there are plenty of nice names out there that sound like cities or are pronounced similar to countries that don't necessarily mean the child is named after that country or place. ( ie, Paris is an old friend that mike has known for a long time and i was happy for our daughter to be named after her. Ayja is a name i liked after hearing it a few times on tv from that model Aja Rock, we just changed the spelling, but had vetoed it for a long time, and thought long and hard about using is despite the fact we loved it simply because we knew other people's reactions might not be so fond)

Fair enough obviously the new zealand kid, is a bit different and probably will get a bit of stick, but having called my children Paris and Ayja I can't say anything as plenty would probably call me a hypocrit. At least, she won't have to tell others how to spell or pronounce her name like so many "modernised" names these days that are spelt really messed up, and she'll never have to worry about having 3 other kids in her class named the same thing.

Unless it's something offensive, parent's shouldn't be made to feel bad about using a name they are passionate about, taking into account the long term repercussions for the child of course. Definately each to their own.

I do think we need to remember that as parents we all make different choices and that includes what we name our kids. The first person to use any name always gets flack for it. Centuries ago Margaret was a boys name, nobody would have dared use it for a girl.

No offense to any Sharons out there, but I'd much rather be called Zealand, than Sharon.

I am sorry, but did you see the siblings names? The others are named Rlexuz Toara Chantz Te Moni, Mikaere Morgan Te Moni and Korizma-Lake Vonnita Manaaki Te Moni.


So that is 3 kids who will change their names (how come Mikaere ended up with a normal name? I think it's just that people are so concerned with themselves and trying to be trendy - and I emphasis the trying. They are so not concerned with their child's future emotional well-being and the prospect of bullying.
