Author: Maya
Subject: 23814
Posted: 17 January 2009 at 10:28pm

Ugh, big hugs and commiserations! I have had months and months of the gremlins being in constant pain from their ears (theirs is worst case scenario pretty much tho) and the only things that I found helped with them were regular pamol, infant nurofen when it was really bad, elevating their heads with phone books under the cot to help ease the pressure and at one stage we even resorted to Phenargan to help them sleep (it also helps dry up the fluid in the eustachean tubes).

Other than than, my advice is definitely see an ENT specialist, coz it's really tough for GP's to effectively diagnose and treat ear infections in small children as they don't have the equipment to get a good look at the ear and GP's tend to have a variety of different ideas on best treatment practise so it can be hard to know which advice to take.

Also, antibiotic drops are more effective than oral antibiotics if there is discharge from the ears, and fluid in the middle ear can cause pressure and discomfort even when there is no infection present. Fluid (glue ear) can also cause hearing problems.
