Some cultures drink throughout their pregs and dont seem to have the FAS issues that are apparently around and ive also heard of someone being diagnosed with FAS even tho his mother swears she never drunk so who knows what to believe maybe they have linked the FAS symptoms to the wrong cause. Midwife sent me infor about "no go" foods, my OB snorted and said that in Japan, sushi was fine because it was so fresh. Also, that alcohol wasn't too bad. My midwife told me that while some people drink in pregnancy and there babies are fine, no one knows the "safe" level and for some people, one drink could cause FAS, so she recommend not drinking at all. I felt she was really good - not really saying "don't do it" but said, "these are the facts, this is what I think, make your own mind up" - and for me, reasonably educated, I appreciated that - and No, I didn't drink. However, with Taine I didn't know I was pregnant and had a few pina coladas in Phuket

I've seen the effects of FAS - it ain't pretty!, and that was from a woman who only drank a couple glasses during her pregnancy because she was told it was OK to do so.

With anything though, you'll always get conflicting information depending on the MW or Doctor. That was one thing I couldn't stand with my post-natal care. I was getting told totally diff advice from the likes of MW, Plunket, Dr etc etc.

I personally think the msg is loud and clear, and it's a selfish act to indulge in an alcoholic beverage when pregnant, but please bare in mind I'm a non-drinker and non-smoker- I can't stand the thought of either (fun police or what? ) Personal life choice and I'm happy with it, I don't need it

But on a side note, think of all these women who fall pregnant unplanned and often go out on weekends boozing it up (especially during that first trimester when they have no idea they are preggers, when its crucial), and they end up going on to keep bub - would be interesting to see the % of bubs that suffer the effects of FAS later on, if they were to conduct a study iykwim.

Edited by BuzzyBee

She said 1 glass of 120mls (a standard drink) every now and then after 16 weeks was fine. But only with a large meal. So I did have some wine over the week leading up to the funeral and I just made just my glass was never too big. I just made sure I stuck to the 120mls rule. Because when you see how much 120mls is - you realise that most of the wines poured at BBQs etc .. and about 2.5 standard drinks!

Mind you I've known other mums who've had bucket loads of wine, and they have been told thats ok too. Some have even tried to convince me to drink when we are at BBQs and stuff, and I have to be very firm with the 'no thanks'. It gets a bit annoying.

This year a study was published in the UK suggesting a small amount of alcohol during pregnancy is associated with better development in children:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/3285792/Pregnant-women-can-drink-a-small-glass-of-wine-a-week.html

I had a few small shandys in Samoa when we got married. I think the next pregnancy I may have a small drink once a week after the first trimester. This is not the only study - there was a very large Australian study showing no increase in birth defects in women who drank 2-14 drinks a week (I don't suggest this!!) The thing about FAS is the facial defects occur at a very specific time - and fairly randomly ie - some women its a couple of drinks, some alcoholics have normal babies.
