I used to add the Karicare AR formula to either hot or cold water with no difference. I use the Avent bottle warmer to warm the bottles for the twins. I put one in the warmer while I am getting bibs on and getting ready and when its hot I turn it off and put the second bottle in and let it sit while I am feeding the first baby. Most of my bottles would take only 4-6 mins to heat up. Good if you are not in a hurry. However, I have begun to get a bit lazy especially as I have been on holiday, and I also microwave my bottles to heat them up, normally on 20 secs. My only guess is that with microwaving the bottles that you can get hot patches so they must be shaken well afterwards to mix it up. I can definitely recommend getting a formula powder dispenser for going out! It makes it really simple to measure out the right amount before you go and then you can make up your bottle as needed and get the powder into the bottle without it going all over the place. I also added the AR Formula to cooled boiled water from the fridge, shook that up then added boiling water and kinda swirled that around so it didn't get too frothy - you work out the ratios of cold to boiling water pretty quickly. My little monster liked her bottles really hot too, Plunket would have frowned at me at the temp they were, but monster wouldn't drink them warm, only hot.

I always had a flask of boiling water with me when I went out. Lots of good tips, thanks guys. It's interesting some of you add hot water to the AR formula and it works ok. That's really good to know.

I think J will start sleeping through the night, hopefully soon. So, in the meantime I am going to trial giving him his dreamfeed on the breast. Because that feed is quite instinctual I am hoping it will work and it won't be confusing for Jackson. And it will allow me to cling to the breast feeding a little bit longer.

Hi,
We use the Karicare HA AR (thickened formula for babies who have allergies) and use mostly cool boiled water and add a bit of boiled water (about 30-50mls depending on how hot the day is) to warm it up and it doesn't seem to thicken it up any faster. I think it helps that we use a cross cut teat. When Im at a cafe I just ask if they can put the bottle in the microwave for 30 seconds or so, but just the water then i add the powder from the little avent powder dispenser.
Or I bring a small flask of hot water and a bottle of cold water so i can make up the bottle to the temp i want.

Does J need his nap changed at the night feed because you could get it all ready and just put it in the flask "if using" to warm up while changing him.
You may just find that on formular he may sleep through after his dreamfeed. Fingers crossed. Hi
the twins had the Karicare AR formula due to reflux until maybe last month? but i just made it up as normal using coolish boiled water, I would pour the water from the jug and let it cool down till warm and it was fine.

Hmm Im not sure Laurie, I have always just heated the water in the microwave and then added the powder.

I know its really hard when they are screaming for their bottle and you have to wait for the damn thing to heat, but I promise you get used to it lol and you learn to block out their screams.

Im guessing the only way your going to be able to do it is to put the formula in the water cold and then heat it up by putting boiling water in a container and putting the bottle in it, thats how we used to do until I said stuff this and used the microwave lol, but caden was always on normal formula.

ETA- And also, If I ever needed to feed him at night time(however on formula you might find that Jackson will be full after his last feed at night and will sleep right through so you wont ahve to encounter this lol) but if he does wake, just dont talk to him and keep the room fairy dark and cradle him close while you feed him and hum and he will probably get all sleepy and milk drunk(Caden did lol and still does hehe)

Might just have to realise that he's going to be awake longer in the night. Can you make it up with say 50ml less in cold water, then add 50ml hot water to it to warm it. I
don't know anything about AR formulas but that is almost the way i made up formula. We took the bottles of boiled water up to bed, and a flask of freshly boiled water and added the quantities until the water was warm enough. I would do the same, or just add formula to warmed water, but the anti-reflux formula HAS to be added to cold water and then has to be heated slowly.... otherwise it thickens too quickly.

I'm lazy and I make up all the bottles for the day in the morning, put them in the fridge and microwave when I need them.

I have used an avent one at westfield and it took SOOOOOOO long to heat, about 8 minutes?

I know its very terrible and I may get told off but I just do Jacksons in the microwave, I take it out every few seconds and shake it. My friend puts the bottle in a mug of water and then puts THAT in the microwave. i used a flask before i discovered the microwave.
boli the jug put it in the flask (just a small $15 from the warehouse) took that out everywhere and just heated the formula later,

Why does it have to be made with cool water??


and in the night id put water in the jug before i went to bed and as soon as he woke i flicked the jug on first and made the bottle and had it warming whie i get him up and change his nappy, by that time its all ready. if not just gave him a cuddle  for a bit but no talking.

So, J is in the process of being converted to bottle... long, emotional story though I am sure most of you know it!

Anyway, he likes his bottles quite warm (bordering on hot) but we have been told to use anti-reflux formula, which means they have to be made up with cool water and then warmed.

This makes it a bit tricky for when we are out, but particularly for the middle of the night feed which Jackson may want for a bit longer yet.

Usually his dream feed was a quick 5 minute affair. For some reason it recently started to take longer, but could still turn him around within about 20 minutes.

Last night, by the time I had made up and warmed the bottle, he was wide awake and it was an hour before he went back to sleep.

Anyone got any tips?

Also, has anyone used the Avent Electric Bottle Warmers.
