Homemade ice cream that has egg yolks in it is often cooked first you make a custard cool it add the rest of ingrediants and freeze. AuntieSarah - as pearls said it has a long shelf life, its made from a natural product (sesame seeds) and (most commonly) doesn't contain any preservatives or hasn't been heat treated etc. The risk comes from the fact that it sits around for a long time, like they don't recommend eating pre-prepared salads etc as you aren't sure how long its been sitting there.

In saying that, its up to the individual what they eat, I indulge in certain items of food that are deemed unsafe, within reason. Don't worry Mel I've been eating it too. I don't remember it being in the book at the start of my pregnancy either, maybe it's a recent thing?

I don't get why tahini wouldn't be safe to eat? Isn't it just ground up sesame seeds? Pearls ( I believe) is right in saying that its the Tahini in the hummus that is unsafe to eat, and if you make it yourself and replace the tahini with peanut butter as Flissty suggested you should be fine, although I would still consume it within 24 hours.

Hmm I don't remember that...just had a look on the nzfsa website and you're right, it says not to eat it. I've been eating hummus the whole time though, and will continue to do so.

I often make hummus without tahini, but with a bit of peanut butter, so you can get round that.

I'd eat the ice cream as long as it doesn't have raw eggs in it. DH's ice cream maker uses raw eggs

They say the risk with hummus is the tahini in it, as it is a 'long life' food and there have also been some recalls in recent months due to listeria in the tahini of certain brands.

That's not to say that all hummus containing tahini is contaminated though, I have been eating it - I can't have my kebabs without it! I just make sure it is all used up or then thrown out within 24hrs.

I'd eat both! I'm sure anything frozen is fine, as long as you made the icecream and froze it straight away (and gave me the recipe while you were at it

Hummus I would eat fresh (ie a container just opened from the supermarket or if homemade then made that day) but not eat it once it's been sitting open in the fridge.

Not not together.

My Mum has an easy homemade icecream recipe using whipped cream, condensed milk and a crunchie bar - frozen together - what are you thoughts on the food safely issue on this one?

Also what are the risks with hummus? I thought it was just the deli stuff to avoid, but going thru the list of "safer foods' today saw all hummus was a no go.
