The orignal au pair had a hard time. Sometimes at last moment the parents would be unable to come back in time so all of a sudden she was on extra duties.

Job description - she ended up cooking family meals and laundry, dishes, lunches, bathroom etc..

A lot of the last minute stuff was due to parents wanting a last minute baby sitter so they could go out.

Of course families can be super. I'm a little disspointed with my friends but have grown to enjoy the orginal AuP thats why she is going to do some care for us.

Do they come long term? I mean, would someone want to come and live in Palmerston North for a year to look after some one elses kids? I struggle living in Palmy north myself sometimes LOL!

I mentioned it to DH as we've been discussing how having a 2nd baby would be too much financial strain with daycare (I earn more at the moment so we both need to work) but this might be a good option.

DH's problem is that he doesn't trust people and is convinced that any stranger in the house will rip us off. Can you trust them? We are in the process of getting an au pair at the moment. We decided to go through an agency just because they do alot of the background checks and ensure the girls and families are well suited. It costs a little more but they also provide support for the au pair (organised weekends for them to get together etc which I think is really important) and help with any problems that might arise.
They visited our home and did a family report and we filled out paper work and wrote a letter with pics to potential au pairs, now the agency is sending me letters that they think would suit our family.
We have a large dairy farm and I do the office work for three farms and number 2 is due in June so I think it will just be good to have someone who can spend time with DS and help everything run smoothly, esp at our busy times.
The agency. is based in Auckland but have support people all that cover NZ. I know a family that uses au pairs.

The first one didn't last 6months....but I would say the kids and the family situation was very difficult.
They have a new one now and the old one is still living here but not as an au pair. I'm goingto have her help me.

The family have a new au pair who just started.

This family pays $200 a week and provide food and board. I've heard of $150 a week.
Au pair required to do around 40hour a week, but the orginal au pair was taken advantage of - and i say that as a friend of both parties.

The NZ side of the company wasn't very helpful to the au pair but the German side great.
The new au pair from Australia.

hope that helps. i know more of the side of the au pair in this case.

Important thing for the family is to set a job description and have it agreed on.
