mummy becks - it was almost 30 years ago when I went to school over there (and we were only there a year), but I don't think they had "prep" then - it was kindy or school. By the time mum had argued with them to let me start school there was only a few weeks left in the school year so I "re-started" at the start of the next year with all the Aussie kids.

Paris was born in august and started back with teh 3rd term (about a week into it). she was callsed as "new entrants" last year. this year she is "year 1".

For you when you went over there the reason you went back a year is because the kids don't start "school" till they are 6. when they are 5 they start but are at "prep". Also in OZ you only start at the begining of the year. So for us Andrew would be at school now as he turns 5 in the first 6 months of the year (the things I learn from my mum who works at a school in Oz).

As for NZ it totally confuses me and even more as Andrw is going to start at a small school.

My eldest's birthday is mid May and we were given the choice to either let him go up or stay where he was. We chose to keep him where he was as socially he wasn't ready so he ended up being one of the eldest in his year group with a couple of friends in the year ahead. It would totally depend on how well they were doing socially and academicly as to where they go when their birthday is in the middle of the year.
Middle one born in October so he spent the first few months in year 0 then went into year one the following year.

Yup depends on how they do at school.  My birthday is 25 June and I started school same day as another girl whose birthday was 9 July, and I ended up a year ahead of her.  I learnt to read well and was put up a class.

Janaya started in February last year. She started in year 0 and moved into another class mixed of both year 1 and 2 in June, as a year 1. She will be year 2 this year, shes just turned 6.

My sisters were born a week apart (2 years difference) both in June.
The oldest, born on the 22nd did 1 and a half year in year 1 and was always the oldest in her year. The youngest was born 15th of June and only did half a year and was the youngest. That was a pain when she left school and was only 17, going to uni and being so much younger than all her friends hanging out in the bars and clubs.


I think all schools have their own cut off dates. they usually have a couple of classes with kids 5-6 and move them round so they have kids at the same stage in each class.

I think it depends on the child cause I remember in my year we had some in june/july who were old compared with me (born in march) and 1 that was the youngin of the class. ... if they're born in june/july - do they do half a year in "year 1" or a year and a half?? Or does it depend on how smart they are?

My birthday is in july and I always seemed quite old for my year - as we moved to Oz 6 weeks after I'd started school and they made me go back to kindy ... cos all kids start at the beginning of the year over there (when I was there they did anyway). Which means you are anywhere from 4.5-5.5 years, depending on when your b'day is .... ie: born july 1 or later you start the next year, before july 1 you start at the start of the year when you're still 4.
But here you start on your b'day .... so for those in the middle of the year, do they spend heaps of time in the first class or very little????
