The reason my first was prem is because my placenta aged prematurely. It was severely calcified when I had my baby at 33 weeks (I had my first bleed at 29 weeks and they managed to hold everything off for 4 weeks with a combination of drugs and bedrest). They couldn't figure out why - the typical reasons, such as smoking, drinking etc, didn't apply to me as I was/am very fit and healthy.

I'm only 6 weeks now and have emailed the Nuture Progress Study to see if I can be a part of that (although not being Auckland based I don't know if this will be possible).

As my2angels said, it really depends if there was a reason found for giving birth early. There was no reason found for me so i've been told the risk of having another prem is slightly higher than normal but still only around 10%. I have a blood clotting disorder so will be under shared care with mw and ob next time (i was last time aswell) but I imagine I will be watched slightly more closely. So yeah, there isn't much I can do to prevent it, seeing as it was a random thing that happened anyway, seemingly for no reason.

But good luck, you must be nervous! Hi

Obviously I had a different reason for having prem bubs, mine were diagnosed with TTTS with one of the main outcomes being preterm labour becuase the uterus would have too much pressure on the cervix. I was resting from 18wks preg on the couch/bed which the Prof/specialist said was the best way to stop pre-term labour. Don't know if that helps you but I'm sure bedrest would help the body not go into labour.

I guess it depends on why your first was prem. My first was 6 weeks prem but they didnt really know why, just a few theories but I was told that there was a greater chance of prem labour second time round but Addison was evicted at 38 weeks, she didnt want to come early. My sister had her 3rd at 30 weeks and her 4th at 26 weeks and there was nothing that could stop the last labour even though they did put a stitch in or whatever it is, something to do with an incompetent cervix. Hi. I'm pregnant with my second child after my first one was born prematurely. I was wondering if anyone had ever done anything successfully to help prevent preterm labour? Did you have an OB or a MW? I have heard progesterone injections have worked well overseas, but these are still in the research/testing phase in NZ...
