I did payroll in my job & if some one came to me requesting a day off/morning off to go to a funeral in general I would allow them the time off as BL. Yes there are people that abuse it but on the whole people are pretty honest regarding BL. I felt that if you wanted to go to the funeral enough then you are suitably breaved.

I was allowed time off to go to my cousins' Nana's funeral (other side of the family, so no blood relation) .. was in the same city though, so I just took the morning off. I knew I would get the day off. I went into work today and my boss told me to I can have the day off as it is blood relative. I just want to go to the funeral thats all and the army have been really good with the family deaths we have had recently.

It's usually for immediate family but there are exceptional circumstances that employers can consider. A couple of years ago my grandmother passed away and DH was able to get a day off work to travel for the funeral so we could all be there - just as well because we had to duck out for two nappy changes while we were at the funeral!!

They don't have to. Its only if its your parents, grandparents, kids or siblings. Some bosses may be more sympathetic but they legally don't have to. But just ask you never know till you do

You may be able to ask for a day's unpaid compassionate leave if you're not eligible for bereavement leave.

So sorry to hear about your Aunty Becks. My old work gave 3 days Bereavement Leave for immediate family and then 1 day for others at their discretion. By the looks of this, if immediate family you can get 3 days, other than that it is poss to get 1 day paid depending on the curcumstances

Why don't you ask? My work seems to be pretty good about that kind of thing. I guess they figure that if you want to go, you're probably better off going. It seems to work for them - I haven't noticed it being abused. I know I will need to go and read up on my contract but I will ask here anyway.

What is the deal (in general) when you need to go to a funeral for a great aunty??

I have just found out my great aunty has passed away (like an hour ago, and even worse from lung cancer and didn't smoke - I really need to try and quite again), and as my parents are not in the country they would like me to go to the funeral.

It is in Tauranga so would be a day trip for me and I really want to go to it.

Would I get the day of as berevement leave???
