My MOH was a Mary Kay consultant (so was I for that matter!) so we both just used our own makeup and she did mine for me on the day. It helps if you know what you want. I don't wear makeup everyday and we were also having a garden wedding so I wanted natural so it was easy to do ourselves. If you want something a bit more glam it might be worth getting someone to do it for you. Argh, bugger about the Napolean Counter. Do you buy a lot of makeup usually?
You could always just book in for a trial for the day of your wedding. That way its free?

I ended up buying a Photo-Finish powder from them, Im still using it two years later. If you were to do your own makeup, this stuff is the BEST!

Or even a big chemist near you.

Everytime I have something to go to I ALWAYS go in to the chemist at the mall and book in for makeup. They charge anywhere from $40-$60 but then its free with purchase - so you walk out of there with new makeup AND feeling a million dollars with your face made up!

I felt exactly the same -- we didnt' have an option for hair and make-up cause got married on an island in the hauraki gulf and no-one could get out there, but for our hair we just went to the hairdresser the week before and asked her to show us how to do the styles ourselves. paid about $60 for the consultation and she was really helpful. I thought with the napolean counter, they will give you discount if you buy some of their product.

I'd recommend doing it yourself or getting a friend to do it. I went to a beauty salon with my bm's and to be honest, it was a big expense for ok make up. My MOh didn't like hers at all. It was nice to be pampered, but we could have spent the money elsewhere. Most chemists will do make up too. Approach your fav make up counter at farmers and ask them.

Am a lot more relaxed now that I know its not unheard of to do your own makeup , and its not like I dont know how to do it , so that is always an option

I asked at the Napolean counter and they quoted me $100 for wedding makeup, so perhaps they've increased their prices .

Kiwi, we have a professional photographer, but we are getting all the photos done for free, in exchange for some computer lessons from DF

Are you paying for a professional photographer?

When we planned our wedding I decided I wanted to spend money on getting fab photos - which also meant *I* needed to look fab so that they weren't a waste of money I paid $80 (maybe less?) for my makeup artist and she was FANTASTIC. That included a trial so I went and saw her a couple of weeks before the wedding and said what I wanted. I don't wear much makeup usually so I said I wanted to look like myself - but better. So I had very natural LOOKING makeup but it just made me look way nicer I love my wedding photos.

If you're going super low key and you don't care about photos and makeup and stuff then definitely DIY is all good. If I hadn't liked my makeup girl I would've got my sister to do mine. Same with my hair.

My sister's friend had her makeup done at Farmers by the Napolean people, it looked pretty good. I got mine done for $75 and am wishing I had done it myself I think u wana look like u on your day. Plus everyone has since said I look better when I do it myself than what it looked like on the day  just buy some oil free make up so u don't shine in the photos and carry a matte powder on the day you'll be fine

I had a nice low key wedding in the summer - in the in-laws garden, with nibbles and drinks afterwards - and I was 26 wks preggers to boot so really kept it simple and the same for my hair and make-up which I did myself. I just used a little tinted moisturisier mixed in with my normal moisturiser to smooth things out a bit, then a dusting of mineral powder, a sweep of some neutral colour on the eyelids with clear mascara to finish off. Then just some lip balm on the lips with a neutral lippie over the top. I got talked into getting a makeup lady for my wedding (she was a Nutrimetics lady, pretty cheap from memory, but I suspect you get what you pay for) and although it was fine, if I had my time over I'd just do it myself. Not only did I think it was a waste of money, but only you can do your makeup perfectly to your taste, and you don't want just anyone flapping around you on your wedding day, you want to surround yourself with complementary personalities .

I'm sure you're perfectly capable of doing it yourself, or if you think you may have an unsteady hand on the day, get a friend to help out. I was also going to recommend Napoleon at Farmers! Or your local pharmacy also do it much cheaper than mobile makeup artists.

I was going to suggest asking at the make up counter at Farmers as well. You might be able to get a free trial as well first so you know what you want.

Next time you get married do it at a nudist colony - then the make up will be the least of your worries!

try ringing up and finding a mary kaye lady - i buy the makeup from her anyway but she only charged me $40... and did well. until then i was going to do my own with the mary kaye makeup anyway, and really the only added thing she did, was make sure my foundation lasted a heck of a lot better.

easy peasy kelly... find something you like, and play around.

You could just get the bridesmaid(s) to do it. I asked my DH's cousin and mine to organise our makeup. I didn't feel all that confident and it was quite nice to relax and have someone do it for us too. Honestly, treat yourself and go to a beauty therapy place and ask for a makeup artist. Our wedding was the ultra budget wedding, and thats the only thing I didnt go cheap on. It cost me $80 all up for my makeup to be done - that included a trial. If you have your own foundation that you usually wear, take it with you cuz theres nothing worse than having a different brand on! I got mine done at the Napoleon Perdis counter at Farmers. In return I just had to buy something at the counter over $60,

ours is very low key too, ceremony in the local reserve/park and reception at our house (a bbq , drinks and nibbles , party type thing ) .
So perhaps I could get away with doing my own (and the bridesmaids own too )

I don't really wear makeup so I got a friend to do mine as part of my have 20 mins to myself before I explode time..........looked nice and natural and thats what I wanted. Our wedding was a very low key back garden wedding though.

So like the unorganised twit that I am , I have completly forgotten to get makeup sorted for my wedding, which as you can see, is soon .
Whats the deal with makeup ? has anyone done their own for their wedding ?
and if they used someone , can anyone recommend someone cheap?
Its like $100 at most of the places ive asked, which is interesting because wedding makeup is pretty basic (i did a makeup artistry course back when I was 18)
