We practice natural family planning as well, and it's worked since Kahtrell was born..........ok so maybe the lack of sex plays a part lmfao.....but I do make sure that it rarely happens during my fertile phase.

Personally I wouldn't go on any form on contraceptive, just because I don't want to be whacking up my body with more hormones then it needs. I especially wouldn't go with an IUD even though the risks are a small percentage. The fact that there is the slight possibility of ectopic pregnancy, scarring and inflammation of the uterus...resulting in infertility (which I believe has occured to a person I know) cramping etc. I wouldn't want to jeopardise my ability of falling pregnant.

But each to their own I reckon, think it really depends on the person.

Hey there ladies
I might be butting in here but having worked as anurse in sexual health I can tell you IUD ae a very good form of contraception.
The copper IUD multiload is free through family planning. How it works is that the copper acts as a spermicide and the shape of the IUD decrease the risk of inplantation (if one does manage to get past the goalie). Yes there are side effects one being that you may get heavier periods and the risk of ectopic pregnancy.

The mirena has prostagladin (same as depo) but is released in small doses. Again it works pretty much the same as the Copper IUD but it also decreases your periods and some women don't get them at all. Again side effects are possible but very realible type of contraception.

I had a copper one and after a year a had bad cramping and had it checked and it was coming out they removed it and put another one in but that wanted out too.

When it was in it was great.

I'm going to look into the mirena one for after bubs is born. I spoke to my friend who had one put in, she said definitely get it put in while you have your AF or when they recommend after pregnancy cause she said she didn't & it hurt cause her cervix was closed.

Come live in the UK- they're free here!    I don't understand why they aren't in NZ- surely its cheaper for the government to pay for these than the long term costs of unwanted pregnancies

When I got my IUD inserted, it was kind of like going for a smear. Same tool used to open you up down there & then the actual IUD was like a short "pinch" on my cervix & then some mild cramping. I also bled a little but all in all it was not that bad at all.
I also had to go back to the doctor a month later to check that it was positioned correctly before I was given the all clear to stop using condoms.
Checking for the strings myself was pretty had actually as my doctor trimmed them quite high but eventually I got the knack of it. To be honest I don't think I check it EVERY month but when I remembered I would.
Hubby also thought it was BRILLIANT that I had an IUD. No more raincoats hahaha.

Hmmm I wonder why I didn't have to get tests done?? I didn't need a smear because I don't need to start until the end of this year and as for pregnancy they told me to come in during a period but I came in a few days after it finished so ruled that one out hehehehe.


Ah well I was happy to have it done at the time.

I've had a copper IUD for four years without any problems...hasn't made my periods any worse or better, but I have issues in that department anyway with PCOS and endo so might not have noticed it if it had.

100% better than condoms *if* your body gets used to it and you don't have the heavy periods, crampy etc.

Condoms are a PITA, but I would rather use them than suffer the side effects I had from the IUD but then I also can't take the pill because of hormonal issues as well. If my body reacted well to the IUD I would still have it now, the concept is great it's easy stuff, most woman don't even notice it.

All I can say is give it a go, if things don't work out after a few months you can always take it out and try something else.

I actually felt one quick pinch and that was it... really it wasn't bad at all for me (the insertion) it was over quick but I was a bit crampy afterwards.

I read that family planning brochure on the IUD & it sounds a little scary....

I know I've been through labour twice now but the pain for inserting it freaks me out, does it hurt much?

Also can some one enlighten me on the TMI of checking to make sure it's still in there each month? emz, the Mirena goes up your v-jay-jay as well. There is another contraceptive patch which goes into your arm but I'm not sure it's available in NZ.


Once we have our finances sorted I'm going to get the Mirena. I hate being on the pill any one I try either messes up my hormones or skin.
When I was in Ireland I was using NuvaRing which is like a monthly IUD which totally rocked. They are supposed to be pretty good, I researched them all through a sexuality paper at TCol but only briefly. I swore black and blue that I would never get one (pre-baby) as they look icky, but TBH I'm thinking about getting one after #2 is born. I'm not going to get a hormonal one, just the copper. I'm a bit IFFY when in comes to IUDs, all because I know the complications that can result from them. Yea they seem like God's gift to contraception but they definitely have their flaws, that I believe are a greater risk in the long run. Ok so a personal opinion I haad very heavy periods with it which bothered me because I couldn't stray far from a bathroom, I went from 3 day periods to long painful 7-9 day periods but this is by no means typical, I stuck it out 6 months and when things didn't improve and I started having back pain I had it removed, the doctor thinks I may be one of the very few who had a allegeric reaction to the copper.

Positives about it? They say it's the best form of contraception, the copper one I had was free but there is Mirena and that is about $400-$500??? and it can stay in longer, your periods get shorter and shorter with that one. You never forget about contraception and you only have to deal with it every few years

I wouldn't get another one for obvious reasons but I have friends who swear by them 100%!! I would give it a go if I was you.
