Lady Lizard - funny you mention the white shelving, I was talking to Dad this morning and he mentioned that too. Might try and go to Mitre 10 this arvo.

Febgirl - yes there is a Target in Chch so I will try and get there over the weekend to have a looksy. We need another set of drawers and we got DD set there and painted them so will prob do the same for DS.

Mitre 10 sells white laminate MDF pre cut shelves and boards- how handy are you and your H, because you could buy the bits and make one in white quite easily?

Sounds quite labour intensive to paint a unit that size, I am sure I have seen those in white, white MDF is so common!
The warehouse sells white cube that you could put together maybe?

have you looked at target the have mdf ones like that, you could paint not sure th $$ though.

We painted some like that from Warehouse stationery. I can't remember the exact process (as my 'we' in the previous sentence actually meant 'my husband'!!!) summerlamb the are drawers are surviving very well!! They are taking the knocks and bangs better than I thought they would! You would never know that the set of drawers are nearly 30 years old!!

ETA: If you go to somewhere like Resenes they will tell you exactly what you need to do!

Thanks very much everyone. I will have a look around at Mitre 10 etc but if I can't find what I want I might have to give painting it myself a go. In fact my FIL might do it for me. He is semi retired and likes doing things like that ( and he's a perfectionist!!)

You can get plain MDH ones at Mitre 10. Yep it definately can be done. Its not that hard either!

We done that exact same thing with a set of drawers for Laurens room. The process is a light sand all over, then clean with sunlight soap or detegent to get rid of any oily patches e:g, body oil from finger prints. Then brush on a primer, then a base coat, then the chosen colour you want over top! Easy peasy and our drawers look like brand new

They dont suggest painting over the laminate.

It would be cheaper for you to buy some cheap wooden ones off TM or something similar and painting them white.

Do you not have a Mitre 10 or Bunnings down there? ...if you can paint those kind of shelving units that you get at like warehouse stationary/ warehouse? Not sure what they are made of but they have that kind of fake wood layer over the mdf stuff?
I know you can't just use a waterbased paint, not sure about enamel but I was wondering more along the lines of getting a company that does spray painting etc to do it. I have a feeling that you can't but if anyone has please let me know!

I want white ones though? They only ones I have found cost heaps and are all made in Auckland so shipping would be ridiculous too.
