The "where do we draw the line" question in medicine is an extremely controversial one IMO.

Whoever finds a true cure for cancer stands to make billions and billions of dollars- far more money than is already spent on research and more money than is made from the current anti-cancer drugs.

If there was such a thing that really worked, one of the big pharmaceutical giants would be on it like a flash, developing it, patenting it, and marketing it because it would make them ALOT of money.

I can't believe people believe all this conspiracy stuff about cancer just from a few articles in newspapers.

Journalists are supposed to cause you to think critically- its their jobs to present controversial topics and represent both sides.

You should never believe everything you read in the papers, because newspapers are ALSO big, corporate money-making businesses. Medical schools aren't allowed to teach natural medicine because there isn't enough scientific research to prove that any of it works, not because they lose their funding.

Medical schools are funded by the government and student fees, not pharmaceutical companies.

Mon- as a fellow uni student at Vic (and in the same predicament as you re: a huge assignment due AFTER bubba's born lol), I would try to help but my area of 'expertise' is religion and humanities lol.  Remember though, with the essays it's almost less what the topic is about than how you argue your point. Agreed, it *does* have to be be controversial to the point that not everyone would agree with you (ie pointless arguing that the sky is blue as everyone knows that).....but topics like euthanasia for instance, while sooooooo interesting to read about, are HUGE and IMO can't be discussed comfortably in anything less than thesis size lol.  But the cancer gene thing sounds good....how many words do you get?

*Lurking* just stumbled across the thread seeing what everybody is up to. *Waves* I like Mama Pickles idea, euthenasia is still a widely debated topic, also liked your idea about middle aged with alzheimers etc. These subjects stir up alot of info and obviously there would be a lot of material and research done into stem research etc. Not sure if you remember but there was a lady (2004 Willie Terpstra who went over to China for a contraversial stem cell transplant - she had MND Motor Nuerone Disease), there was some signs of improvement but she then died. MND is a good one as far as euthanasia is concerned. Also what is the difference between having a living will versus getting someone to take away your pain (ie euthansia). A living will can tell doctors no resucitation, no drugs to keep you living etc or drugs to prolong your life if you have complications from any disease whether it be cancer or what. I guess this is just something that is close to my heart really seeing my Mother suffer terribly from MND and as much as I wanted her to stay alive for as long as possible, it was cruel, people put down dogs for much less. Sorry if it sounds all dramatic etc but it would make for a very good paper and one to really get the brain thinking.

Elderly or young with terminal illnesses.
Or middle aged people with alzheimers?

Where do you draw the line between quality or quantity of life?
Is it worth prolonging someones life just to see/let them deteriorate.
