Author: HippyMama
Subject: 24977
Posted: 04 March 2009 at 4:12pm

A vegan / vegetarian diet shouldn't affect your fertility so long as you ensure you are getting enough of the right vitamins, minerals and proteins - definitely not an impossible task (just requires slightly more effort).

I know you've said you don't like to take iron pills, but what about a liquid iron supplement like Spatone - which is not actually made "of" anything, but is spring water naturally high in ferrous sulfate and easily absorbed into the body. I take this and haven't had any issues with being constipated or nauseous whatsoever. Check out <a href=""http://www.healthpost.co.nz"" target="_blank">www.healthpost.co.nz as last time I looked they were running a great special on the 28 packs (one a day).

I'm afraid though, that this is really where my useful advice runs out, as I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian so I still eat *some* dairy products and eggs, and only exclude products made with animal rennet / gelatine, or cage farmed etc.

Just as a very general overview though, we have falafel wraps / kebabs quite often which are *really* tasty with lots of hummus and mayonnaise and veges fresh from our garden. We also eat basic things like fettucine alfredo, corn fritters and salad, home made pizzas, as well as vegetarian burgers and hotdogs made. In winter I also do a mean vege casserole on rice as well as a tofu vege stir fry.

Have you thought about joining the Vegetarian Society? I joined about two months into becoming a vegetarian and they have been a wonderful resource, their website is: <a href=""http://www.vegetarian.org.nz/content/home/auckland-centre/"" target="_blank">http://www.vegetarian.org.nz/content/home/auckland-centre/

I find myself eating the same stuff all the time and getting sick of it. I'm pretty over pasta/rice dishes too!

Firstly, does anyone have any recipes for vegetarian/vegan meals that are easy/quick?

I don't eat the following (long list ;-) )
Meat
Seafood
Eggs
Cows milk
Geletine
Chicken stocks etc

Basically anything animal related is a no-go.

Secondly, does anyone know if this sort of diet causes any problems with fertility etc?

Thirdly, while I'm not feeling too bad I can feel my body starting to get fairly tired and sluggish. Does anyone have any tips of natural vitamins or supplements I can take to boost my energy levels. I prefer not to take Iron pills as they wreck havoc with my body.

Thanks ladies

Edited by Parki
