Although hubby bought up a good point we are not so worried about the birth and me. what the concern is is the first night after bubba is born what if someting goes wrong with bubba I guess we will have to ask our midwife.
So now i am thinking of maybe staying home for as long as possible and jsut going in to the hospital at the last minute that way we can spend at least the first night in there so if bubba starts chocking( Alan did this) then there is the staff there to help deal with it.

At this stage we have talked about it and I am goign to arrange with my midwife to come see us when Pete is here so we can talk about a plan and all.
Lizzle I deffently plan to have someone here for Alan and I am deffently not likely to do a katie I make lots of noise.
The more I think of a homebirth the mroe i like the idea and like you said Kellz we can change our mind's at anytime and head up to the hospital.
Andie as far as keeping people away that is why you have a husband he can play watchdog at the door after bubs is born . When i had Alan I was keen to stay in hospital, but when the time came i could not wait to get out it drove me totally nuts it was a tiny little room and it was stinky hot.
Anyway will let you all know how we get on in deciding thanks for all the advice and ideas guy's.

At the moment i am more keen on having another water birth than a home birth so if it comes to one or the other then off to the birthing centre it is! (I also second janine and would like time away from quinn...but last time i was at birth care and i blubbered so much that i came home a day after having quinn. i am just a bit of a home-person!)

go to the home birth site www.homebirth.org.nz , there is heaps of info there.

    Author: Kellz
Subject: 2505
Posted: 18 May 2006 at 9:34am

Hi. I am 19 weeks pregnant with our first baby, and unless I develop problems later in my pregnancy we are pretty sure we are going to have a homebirth. My best friend had a homebirth almost 2 years ago, and is due in a few weeks with her second baby which they are also having at home. She has 3 younger siblings who were all born at home, and she wanted to have that same experience too. I am hoping to be there too if bubs comes on time, as I live 4 hrs away and have got time off wk around when its due!

I am a nurse, and feel that birth is a natural process, and unless I (or bubs) is "sick" then I dont need to be in the hospital. I am aiming to have a "natural" birth, meaning no drugs, unless there are problems.

My advise would be to talk to your midwife about what would happen if there were complications with you or the baby. There are usually 2 midwives with you for the actual birth, and they carry Oxygen, and resusitation equipment and drugs for you and for the baby should they be needed.
You can also change your mind , and go to the hospital at any stage if you choose.
The ammount of complications that occur is apparently a lot less with home births, because you are not given any drugs ( for pain or to speed up the labour etc). Having Pethadine for example can suppress the baby's breathing meaning more help is needed to get it breathing.

I have been looking into drug free pain relieving options such as the breathing you learn through yoga, acupressure, use of TENs machine ( you can hire them).

At first my husband wasnt that keen, but when we discussed it at length with the midwife we realised that it is not an "an safe" option. We still havent decided for sure, beacuse we want to see how the rest of the pregnancy progresses-If there is a risk for myself or the baby we will have a hospital birth. I also like the idea of a water birth, and if I do go to the hospital then I hope I can use the birthing pool. Also in the hospital there are nurses and midwives there 24 hrs a day which can help with breastfeeding, bathing etc. If you have a home birth the midwife can visit every day, but is not there all the time!

Well I hope this gives you something to think about!

Kelly
The only thing I wasn't too keen on - hubby rings up. my contractions are a minute and coming in every three. She asks if we can "wait another half an hour before coming in - we're busy"!!!!!

I would suggest even if you wanted a home birth, having someone there for Alan only. Afterall, us mums usually aren't "doing a Katie" and having a silent birth. Alan may be quite upset by any noises you are making. If you have a "support person" for him, they can take him away if he gets upset.
Also, if you did have bubs in the hospital, you can leave two hours after delivery anyway!

I wanted a birthing centre, so it'd be a nice comfy environment but I wouldn't have to clean up the mess (now I know better on just how far our midwives job goes - thanks guys!). I don't like the idea of a hospital bed, a curtain for a 'door', sharing a room, or having a toilet waaayyy down the hallway. I would have chosen home birth if it weren't for the fact that our house is in a constant state of repair, and we don't have a lot of privacy - our neighbours are pretty close, and most of our visitors don't knock - they just open the front door and in they come! There's some things you just need a little more privacy for, I think!

My midwife suggested using the hospital like a birthing centre - have baby there, and as soon as we can leave, take off to home. I'm thinking of requesting that, as I'm too fussy a sleeper to get a wink's sleep in a hospital bed no matter what, and while it'd be nice not to be near the phone ringing and at the mercy of whoever wants to visit whenever they want to visit, It'd also be nicer to sleep in my own bed with my hubby there.
