Yes, been a tough old time for us of late but I am feeling a whole lot more positive about life now. I'm not charting anymore, decided to throw away my thermometer and stop worrying about it so much. I've got a pretty good idea when I ov so that will do. This journey definitely a hard one - I'm sure we will all end up with our BFP's before too long. Hey I havent been on for ages! Oh Mrs Hopeful so sorry to hear what you have been through, that is just really awful. I think the counsellor sounds like a good idea, would help to talk to someone professional and it might do you the world of good. Hope things get abit easier for you...

CaliandJack, so great to see how well you are doing, time has gone quick, bet you are just so happy

Well we did our first IVF cycle in May and was a BFN, so we were pretty gutted...But feeling alot more positive now and trying next IVF cycle in September, so really hoping it works!! You get a free counselling session at FA, so Im going to go along next week, think this journey takes its toll sometimes and really helps to talk to someone!!

I thought I would bump this thread, there may be some other 'older' mums around that might like to share their stories.

We are putting off TTC for another month or so, I'm struggling with life a bit at the moment. I ended up at my doctors yesterday and broke down, I've turned into someone I dont even like. Emotional, irritable and angry at the world and my poor husband is taking the brunt of it all. My doctor has asked me to take a few more months out before we try again (supposed to start this month) and I need to spend some time sorting myself out. We have only been married for 9 months and experienced 3 m/c in this time - I feel totally ripped off. Most couples say the 1st year of marriage is the best. Ours has been full of heart break. My head is crazy to say the least - I hate some of the negative thoughts going on in there.
So we are going to see a counceller and I will take a few more months out - I am happy to wait, almost feel a bit relieved......but on the other hand I hate watching each month pass by without trying. When you are 37 it feels like every month is so precious. Its so weird - I am so desperate to be a Mum but the thought of trying again is just so scary. I am scared of falling pregnant and miscarrying and having to go through this all over again. Or worst of all, not being able to conceive again. I've gone back and read some of the earlier posts on here, I was so relaxed and happy back in September around our wedding and when we started trying - I so badly want to be back in that head space. I'm way too consumed with this now - hard to know what to do to forget about it for awhile. I wasn't sure where to post this....figured this was as good a place as any.

Jano, we conceived both our children first time around! My first time to this site. I am 39 and 12 weeks with my first, DD Oct 19 after one cycle of IVF. Me and hubby are just thrilled as we never thought it could happen, especially with a threatened mc early on. I haven't even thought about the age but realise I am an older mum to be! Jano- I am now pg with our second bubba and it was the result of a not trying/not preventing approach! We only did that for 2-3 months really and weren't really charting or anything and certainly weren't this month when we concieved...so I am feeling very blessed it didn't take long. FX now it's a sticky baby!!  We didn't want it to take as long as it took as to get our first but yeah we were very suprised it happened so quickly! Like Freckle says, it's one of the unknowns. Jano....I was 35 for DS and ttc 9 months for him and we have not been preventing since he was born and actively trying for number 2 so far 10 months...to no avail...

ETA DS will be 2 in June

Jano - it took over 2 years for us to get pregnant with the first who is now 9 months old and I am pregnant with the 2nd - so it was definitely shorter for us the 2nd time round but I don't know if this is the norm or not.

A question for those that have more than one child- did you find it easy to conceive the 2nd? I am 35, probably won't start TTC until I'm 36. I was reading on fertility friend that its normal for women in their late 30s to take up to 2 years to conceive where there are no other fertility problems, we're on to our 2nd so fx we are successful.
I'm going to start using OPKs as I am ovulating but with temping don't know when until afterwards, and my cycle has gone a little irregular.
Will go back to my gp and book in to get a scan done to make sure there isn't anything else to be concerned about.

I'm 38, had three miscarriages last year (last one just before xmas) and I self referred myself to a specialist after the second one. Getting pregnant wasn't an issue last year (hoping it isn't this year either), but getting a sticky one was. Fx 2010 brings you all BFP's and soon.

Hi everyone,
I've been 'out of range' due to having moved in the weekend and have only just got re-connected today - its been awful without the internet!!!

We had our 3rd IUI treatment today after having daily BT since Monday. FX this one works - seemed to be a lot more pleasant (staff & proceedure) than the last two so thats positive.

Now have to wait 2wks to see if it works. The nurse said that if it doesnt they will up the clomid level for next time eeek. Found that I was super awake after the last dose!!!

I had all my test done and they came back normal, also got AF after a 14 day LP, so back into it this month, not charting or anything like that. Bding when it suits us and seeing how it goes, I'm starting at uni part-time this month and going to focus on my studies, if we still don't have a bfp in 3 months time, I'll send Dh to get tested.

I don't really want to go down the FA/IVF route, if we can't conceive on our own then children aren't going to be part of our future.

Think I might sneak in here too if I may?  I'm 36 in March and TTC number 2...already! lol. Only because of my age are we TTC so soon. DP is 37  in 2 weeks so we're aware we don't have quite as much leeway as others. This is our first cycle officially TTC, its a bit tricky charting as I'm still BF.

For those who aren't familiar with me (I've been around on these boards for years lol ) I had a m/c about 14 weeks pg approx 11 years ago, then 2 m/c before becomming pg with Clodagh. She was born 22 May last year at a healthy 8lb 9oz and is lovely and perfect in all respects (well we think so lol). Mrs Hopeful, so sorry to hear about your mc, hope you are feeling better... I know what you mean about feeling time is running out, we just want a baby soon!! As Im 39, my doctor sent me for all the test, which came back good also DH has sperm test and all good there too.. Also did that egg test & I have apparently got loads left!! yay.. I've been on 3 cycles of clomid.. But since I ovulate normally, that doesnt really do anything for me... Guess just have to keep trying huh! Would be brilliant to get a Xmas BFP!!

I went to see my doctor last night, I've been trying since August this year, got pg twice and m/c both. Mind you...not sure you could count the 2nd one as a m/c - my hcg levels didn't rise and it was so early......but I was still bumed out. If I hadn't tested I would've thought my AF was week late and heavier than usual.
My doctor told me that a fertility clinic wont want a bar of me til I've m/c 3 times, even at 37! Crazy hey! Its definitely possible over 35, just takes time and patience ..... both of which (I feel) are running out! I've been pregnant 10 years ago myself so figured there's nothing wrong with me, will get DH tested make sure everything is working with him. My GP said it could take 12-18 months off bcp partly due to my age I'm 36 but seems being over 35 is the clincher.

Hi mrsg1, it can be frustrating this TTC business and as far as i was aware everything was working fine with me: regular cycle no issues and I did manage to get pregnant 15 yrs ago

We since found out the issue was with my DP - poor fella has an extra chromasome which has stuffed his fertility.
I dont know why alot of the focus is on it being the 'females' problem as it seems that nowdays its pretty even between the sexes.

They do say to give it 12-18mths once off the BCP but, depending on age, it would pay to get both of you tested just to be sure

Happygal I think so, I haven't had any tests done, I've been off bcp since January and TTC since August. I've had regular cycles up until last month which has got me stumped, as its only since I've started charting.

No news from me either, not much we can do until IUI next year.
On the + side have been concentrating on losing weight, 6.5kgs and counting lol
Happygal, not much to advise you about on IUI, you get to have copious blood tests as they track the increase in your LH then once its high enough they call you in for the proceedure. Its just like having a smear, pretty painless really, you may get cramps or not afterwards. Once all done, they send you off into the world to go about your day and stress over the next 2wks to see if it worked

Glad your F+ discussion went well and that is good you get an extra IUI too.. Any advice on IUI for me?? As we are going to do IUI in Feb if this cycle of clomid doesn't work... FX it does... I didn't really have any side effects on clomid, started on 50mg and now on 100mg...

Hi Ladies,
We had our 'discussion' with F+ about the complete muck up with our DI/IUI in October. These Docs are very PR focused and pretty much showed his astonishment at what had happened then left it at that - oh we get an extra IUI from it so I guess in that respect it was good.

Anyhow, when we get back into things in Feb I will be on clomid 50mg - eeek
Any side effects I should be concerned about?

Hi everyone,
We are TTC#1, i'm 37, (38 in Jan) & DP is 40, we have been trying for 3yrs and have found out that DP has a genetic problem causing him to be infertile.
Have so far tried 2x IUI's but taking a break until Feb as the experience has not been the greatest for me and need to de-stress as it were

I am very aware of my age but I feel alot better knowing that there are more of us 'older' trying to be mums out there

Hi all...

TTC #1 - I'm 39 (40 in Dec) & DH is 35 & no kids - we got married 1st July 09 in Rarotonga (its just stunning there!). Been off the BCPs for 2 yrs - no contraception in that time - charting for over a yr - taking Elevit - been to Dr's for all my blood tests at CD2 & halfway through LP - all tests came back normal - DH's swimmers seemed fine too. Finally on the 24th Nov we have a publicly funded 1st consultation at FA's - fingers crossed they accept us & help us achieve our dream of having our own little healthy & happy baby.

tarns I agree, I think I am looking at a real reason to stop TTC as time goes on & no result it is taking its toll, so if I thought or got told I was getting too old then I would stop & could get back on with my life.

Jazzy....I don't think there's a magic number - everyone's situation is different. I was amazed by the woman on 60mins (or was it 20/20?) who is NZ's oldest mum. While I don't necessarily want to be having kids in my 50's as she did - that's just how her life worked out and she is doing an awesome job with her kids.
I don't think others should dictate when we are `too old'

Sprackleberries congrats to you, I had a mc at 12wks so know how heart breaking it is, but 3, that is so unfair.

I am in this group "olders mums" lol, I know & know of heaps of women who have had babies in their 40s, I worked in a women hospital so there were quite a few 40+ having healthy babies.

We have been tiring for 1 more, wanting a girl, but 3yrs on it has not happened so I am thinking it won't & am now thinking of giving up on it. I keep giving myself an age to when I will stop trying but that comes & goes.

Bit far to trek to Hamilton from Otago but will be looking more into acupuncture for sure.
I am in the charting thread, have been charting now for 3 months and wow I have learned so many things. I didnt know my LP (time from ov - AF) was too short to sustain a pregnancy so have rectified that by taking B6.

Hi Joro! I turned 41 on Monday - it's great to find a niche for us ol' chicks! I always chuckle when I hear it said "You're only asold as you feel" - as these days I am feeling about 90!

Yesterday I BEGAN MY 3RD TRIMESTER!! This is a huge event for our family as we lost 3 littlies in their first trimesters which was heartbreaking.

I get SO excited really all of your posts and have my fingers and toes constantly crossed for those of you who are waiting for the good news!

Hi Nathansmummy! No prob. Not sure if I can give names on here? Kane Monrad in Hamilton. He also gets you to do your charting which tells a lot. Herbs are different for everyone as he gave me stuff to help with fibroids etc. Others he can tell from chart whether 'mind' is having an effect etc. B4 I went was getting hormonal pimples etc and noticed changes throughout..... he can help with multi MS too. Anyway..... Hi everyone

Never let anyone tell you that your too old!! I was 41yrs old when I conceived my daughter after 7 months of trying. I was doing 'home ovulation testing' and trying on days 12/14/16 when my gynaecologist said to add in day 10. It worked because the very next month I was pregnant. I took elevit throughout the entire process, had an amnio, and went on to have a perfect pregnancy - no morning sickness or otherwise. I gave birth on my due date, at the age of 42. My daughter was a healthy 4kg. I stopped breastfeeding after 6 months as we have been ttc again. It's now been 10months and I'm willing to keep trying until I turn 44. We went to the fertility clinic to make sure everything was OK as time is definitely running out now, but he sent me away because he said that my test results were perfectly normal and clomiphene could upset my normal cycle. I know of two women who gave birth at the age of 45 with no complications. Hi everyone.....I am def and OLDIE I am 42 and now 12 weeks preg with first bub despite fibroids, FSH levels etc. I will always be thankful to our acupuncturist / chinese herbalist who we were seeing for just 2 months before conception (he had 6 others fall preg around same time). Had been TTC for about a year...prob more. I've had what have felt like AF symptoms for the last couple of weeks and she hasn't arrived. Also boobs are a bit tender but as they are all the same as AF ones its hard to tell the difference.
I'm going to wait until the weekend, to make sure AF doesn't turn up.
I've tested before and got BFN only to have AF turn up the next day. Hiya ladies, I'm only 24 and expecting my first in just over 15 weeks (yay!) but thought I'd drop by and say that age is no barrier! My Mum had my oldest sister when she was 24years old and proceeded to have another 5 kids over the space of 20yrs! So yup, that means she had her last (my wee brother) at age 44!!! (3 months before her 45th birthday). She had my younger sister at 39, and me when she was 34, the other 3 kids were obviously between 24 and 34. It did take a little longer with the younger two. She had 3 MC's between me and my sis (and my sis was to be a twin but her twin died when mum was 12wks preg). and had 4 MC's between lil sis and lil bro but I don't think she did too bad for her age! Considering she had the stress of all those other kids to look after!
So it can be done so keep your chins up and keep trying! Your time will come And congrats to those of you who have gotten your BFP's recently! Yeah it was a bit that way with me, frequency def dropped away once I got my BFP, but seems to be back to normal now. Yeah I did get a few - nothing that gave it away though?
I was spotting about 3 days before my AF which is totally normal for me so thought AF was on her way. But then it disappeared so kind of thought that was odd. My temp stayed up as well so that wa also good indication. My boobs hurt, but they usually do anyway and I had my normal AF cramps as well, keep running off to the loo with tampon in hand but it was never there! I had a wee bit of heart burn, incredibly emotional and a smidge irritable.....again, poor DH! I did two pg tests, both negative but got my positive on 20 dpo. Basically my symptons were exactly the same as I would get just before my AF so its quite confusing. Now I feel seedy, my boobs hurt and I have some heart burn. You can buy the Fertiltea online from Baby for you, it has chasteberry, red raspberry, peppermint etc, its quite nice, been to be really good for conceiving.. According to what I've read stress doesn't have any impact on conception, what is usually does is effect bding. Oh yeah sorry, I forgot the tips for getting pg!
For me didnt go over board, but did temp and chart religiously the month I conceived. BD'd lots around the right time (at least once per day if we could manage it!) I took my multi vitamin, and doubled up on the evening primrose/fish oil I was taking as it's supposed to help CM. I drank grapefruit juice before OV for CM and pineapple juice after for implantation. Otherwise that's it.
As for stress reducing conception rate, I dont think that holds as both DP and I had terrible stressful things around that time, me with work and him with family!

Congrats mrshopeful! How in the world do you drink 2-3 litres of water a day?? I struggle to get a few glasses down!
