Kandice- exciting about the move, but I totally sympathise re: cost!

When DH and I came back from the UK we brought practically nothing practical with us. We have lots of nice (worthless) artwork , but we still don't have furniture in all the rooms!

Once we moved in, EVERY week we found stuff that we needed to buy (rubbish bin, chopping board, etc etc etc)
Finding out this way did mean we could buy little bits and pieces here and there rather than all in one go.

Briscoes was good (during sales, but they have regular sales) and TradeMe has been awesome for furniture bits, and the warehouse is always good too.

Also, ask around your friends and family- you never know what people have hoarded in their cupboards that they are prepared to give away or exchange for a few bucks. A casserole dish here, a toaster there, you might build up a collection before you know it.

may be worth asking WINZ for extra to cover the rent in advance - when i worked in housing for the local council they always provided it, on top of the 3-week bond . . .

um, if you have three or so weeks, SAVE your money towards the move, then you won't need to get winz to pay your bond (cause they won't pay it, they will LEND it to you)

When I was flatting, we used to rent our fridge. It was a few dollars a week and we could cancel any time. It meant when we moved flats they'd come and move it for us, and if the current one didn't fit in the new house, they'd exchange it for one that did. It might be a good option to rent one for a few weeks/months while you save to buy one? It takes one thing off your list of expenses for a while.

Hi,

Thanks everyone for your replies.
I have now got a dinner set and knifes forks.
Iv got my rent in advance sorted and that covers the first two weeks.
I will be able to get a fridge next week, and hopefully winz will pay my bond. Il ask about a food grant but i may be able to manage it, im not desperate just yet lol.
Im hoping if i ask the landlords i will be able to change to weekly rent after that.

Thanks for all the offers, but i think we will be ok, i will get back to you come moving week and make sure.

I'm moving too. We are lucky enough to be in the process of getting some new stuff for our home, so we are trying to get rid of stuff, including an old but sturdy dining room table set. I'll ask hubby how much he'll let it go for if you are keen?

I'm starting the lists. Lists of what has to go last, of places to change our contact details etc. I'm bound to forget something.

The sallys will help you out for free if you need it, you need to go into the church/family store and ask who to talk to about it they will give you what you need if they can (from cutlery and bedding to furniture). You don't have to be a church goer to ask.

WINZ can grant up to $600 for bond and/or rent in advance, they should be able to lend the remaining money you need. This can also be for essiencal items, whiteware included. They should be able to give you a food grant too to help with the first shop if you explain that you're moving from a family members house so don't  have any current supplies.

I think everyone differs on the rent in advance, so just ask your landlord how they want to do it.

The Warehouse has toasters and small appliances for $10-20 - they're the budget brand ones, but do just as good a job. Try and spread the cost out over the next few weeks and you'll be fine For pots and pans, does ChCh have a "bargains" section in the paper at all? I know here in the Naki, every Friday is an Under $200 section in the paper where people just list random things, plus of course TradeMe. The Warehouse does the starting out packs as well for a decent price (I think $100 for the kitchen one which is pots, pans and utensils??). Do you "need" a microwave straight away?? If you do, I got mine off TM for $50 so yeah - gotta love TM!!

Don't forget the super shed for cheap stuff. 10 bits of cutlery or crockery for $1 Ive found it really good for stocking up on bowls and cups the kids lose.

When we bought our first house (moved stright there from my parents) I found it easier on the wallet to do our first big supermarket shop over the 3-4wks preceeding our move. I wrote a big list of everything we would need (food, cleaning products etc) and went to the supermarket each week and bought the things on my list that were on special. Kmart, Bond and Bond, The Warehouse have "moving into new flat" combos that you can buy that basically includes everything that you would need. They are quite reasonably priced too... so I'd look for something like that.

Kandice I have a 2 slice toaster that goes and a jug (it does leak though) that you can have for free if you want them until you get new ones. Just let me know.

The 2 weeks in advance - basically you pay those upfront and then start paying the rent when you move in. But it means you're always 2 weeks ahead, so when you move out the last 2 weeks are rent-free.

The two weeks is for the FIRST two weeks.

So "pretend" you pay your two weeks up fron on next Monday 23rd. That would pay your rent up until Sunday 5th and you would have to pay rent again on the 6th.

We had to give 3 weeks notice so we can move in any time from 2/4 and we have to be completely out of our current place by 5/4 so we get a few days to move. Hi ladies, from what I remember from my renting days, 2 weeks in advance goes towards your last two weeks rent at the property.. ie. you pay that and when you move in you have to start paying rent straight away... it means you are paying lots upfront but when you go to leave you don't have to pay those last two weeks!

Also, when my DF and I got back from Europe we had nothing in terms of kitchen gear, I found trademe a godsend.. ie dinnersets @ $2, same for bulk lots of kitchen utensils etc... its so great getting a bargain!

Also, salvation army/city mission is a great place to find some bargains! Just a few thoughts anyway..

Im heading to the warehouse today to get a dinner set, and knifes/fork set as well.
After the rent in advance this week, plus the current rent.. Im broke lol.

So im buying a fridge next week, and everything else the week we move.

I've been trying to figure that one out as well as we have just paid our 3 weeks bond and 2 weeks in advance for our new place on the beach :) I assumed it was for the first 2 weeks as you have the bond as back up in case you skip out on the land lord (or do damage)

The warehouse is always cheap for kitchen stuff. We got all our whiteware bulk from Harvey Norman last year with a couple of years interest free to pay it off. Man!! April is going to be a broke month. Moving is quite costly! Especially moving from mums where we have no bond, no power bills etc.
Oh and no fridge!

So i have to buy a fridge, pay $150 for a moving truck beause we have 2 cars with no tow balls, do the 'first' not to mention expensive grocery shop and put a bond into a power account because i have never had a power bill as such. I had a power manager, do you think they will let me away with a bond if iv had that? I was kind of hoping to go with contact though.

Then the rent in advance is a killer!! I heard that winz only pay bond, not rent in advance. Anyone else heard this? Im hoping they will help out with bond as we really need to get out of here.

Then theres the bits and peices we need, like we have no microwave, toaster, pots, or plates. Oh and no jug.. So im hoping for some bargains on trade me. A microwave isnt a necessity so that can wait..

I guess im just thinking out loud and hoping i havent forgotten anything!!
