Gosh, I was never teased for being a leftie.

Me, my Mum, Dad and sister are all lefties.
DH's parents are both lefties - he's a righty.

Hannah doesn't seem to have a clear preference yet.

helen no it's not late..can happen right till 5 just most show a preference by 2ish but it's totally normal to wait that long too:)

Just wanted to let you know that DD would use both left and right hands equally right through pre-school and it was only when she started school that she became right handed. I don't know if this is very late but she was equally good with each hand and would pick things up equally with each hand as well.

My DH could write with both hands perfectly, but in France they forced kids to write with their right hand so now he is right handed.

often doesn't show itself properly till about 2... but some kids like me... used one hand mostly from birth..I'm left and whole family right thought Dad and Gran were changed hands at school...

Is left-handedness inherited? Left-handed parents are more likely to have left-handed children. It has been demonstrated that handedness runs in families, but of course environmental pressure must also be considered, for parents may purposefully or incidentally teach their children to be right- or left-handed. Adoption studies suggest that handedness is under genetic control as the results indicate the handedness of adopted children is more likely to follow that of their birth parents than their adopted parents.

Some researchers have hypothesized the existence of a single gene which confers right-handedness; individuals lacking this gene display random handedness with about one-half being right-handed and the other half being left-handed. One problem with this single-gene theory is that other studies show that when both parents are left-handed they have a 30% to 40% chance of having a left-handed child. If left-handedness were a recessive trait and both parents are left-handed, then all of their children should be left-handed. Perhaps more than one gene is involved, or other more complex factors come into play. When a full gene map has been developed, the genetic factors will hopefully become more clear.

In the final analysis, we still have much to learn about handedness, its causes, and the manner in which it interacts with human behavior. The probability of major breakthroughs because of advances in neuroscience and genetic studies appear to be high. All the males in my DHs family are leftys.

Im a leftie but my parents suspected that i was meant to be a righty because i began everything on the right but my mother had her right hand amputated 2 yrs before i was born and was still learning how to write for herself (she was a righty) so they think i just copied off her. Im ambedextris (have no idea how to spell it! lol) now.

Considering both DH and I are leftys we assumed Bay would be and in fact he actually did most things taking off left first (walking etc) but nop he is a righty. Unsure about Astin yet.

There are plenty of lefties in my family too, and DD is showing qute a few leftie tendencies, but it is still hard to tell for sure.

She mostly uses a spoon with her left hand, but not always.

My Mum thinks a good test is which leg they pick up first when they stand to put trousers on.

My Mum is right and my stepfather is left, but half bro is right.

when Ella was a baby we thought she might be a leftie (my bro and grandma are both lefties) as she did seem to favour that side. However now she is definitely right handed.

How do you tell if your child will be lefthanded or righhanded?
