Hey everyone, thanks for the replys, I thnk we'll just try to get there early and try to get an extra seat.
We are going to St louis for a wedding and will be holidaying for 6 weeks before going to the indy 500.

SNAP - we are flying from Illinios to NZ next week but by AirNZ. We flew AirNZ here (I was 30 weeks pregnant and DD was 2) and they gave us an entire row by resuffling other passengers. I felt pretty stink but it was great with the extra room as I was on my own (DH was already here). We have flown Qantas before and they are very accommodatng so would not worry either way. If your bubs fits into a bassinet then sweet.
This time I will have a 7 week old and a 2 year old. Wish me luck!!!!

If you're not going to request a bassinette stay away from the bulkhead seats. We flew to Ireland at Xmas, got bassinettes for both girls, and for one of the flights they put a 7 months pregnant lady and her husband in between us
It worked out in our favour as we let them sit on one side and they were super clucky so helped out with the girls

Also I don't think it'd be comfortable for bubs in the bassinette. Are you flying Air NZ? If so then you can buy an 'empty' seat next to you for $75 (if there are two of you travelling, then you could even buy two extra seats) - bargain for the extra space it will give you!

Oh damn, just read your post properly and you're flying Qantas - still might be worth giving them a call to ask if they will do the same deal as Air NZ and let you 'buy' an empty seat - hey they might even just offer you one....

The back of the plane is the safest part to be in. The front is less bumpy but the bulkhead is generally where they put you if you need a bassinette. Personally I hate being behind the bulkhead but if the plane is configured right you usually get a little more room.

I don't have any advice for baby...
But I've done that exact trip at least 10 times (20, if you count return flights), and for me, the back of the plane if my favourite.
It's darker, quieter - and you're more likely to find empty seats

we are flying to LA then to Illinois in 4 weeks
My little munchkin is 72cm(at least) Qantas bassinets are 71cm long, what are the chances that he will fit in there comfortably?

So now I'm thinking that we probably won't want a bassinet, and will try to ask for a block of seats if the plane isn't full.
What seats would you think are the best to have a baby in?

Bulkhead-then you have the space to walk around

Back of the plane- then he can watch all the people going past, and more chance of being able to get a block of seats for him to sit in.
