Just suits me to breastfeed for that long.... I always said though I would not be breastfeeding a school kid, that would be outside my personal comfort zone. The World Health Organisation recommend breastfeeding until the age of two. Both serve the same purpose.

And if people came up to me this is my response: Do you agree that toddlers still need a certain amount of milk?

Answer usually that I get: Yes but they are of the age of being able to drink cows milk.

Mine: Okay, but why do I need to give her milk from a cow made for calves when my body is able to make her milk made specially for her?

And honestly I think no one will bat an eyelid if I just expressed and gave it to her in a cup or milk. It is the actual fact that you breastfeed. And people see boobs as a sexual thing where I see it first as a way to feed my child.

Disclaimer: I am not against formula feeding. Mom and child relationship needs to come first and we all make different decisions due to circumstances and choices.

I only recently weaned Charlotte, and experiece tells me that lots and lots of people feed beyond 1 year but do it "hidden" and "on the quiet" as people are fairly extreme in their views on it beyond the walking talking stage. I got bawled out rather publically and humiliatingly at a christmas function by a "friend" of ours for still feeding charlotte, to her it was akin to child abuse and she said she had contemplated rigning CYFS when she saw me in the paper talking about extended feeding for something or other. Actually made me cry.
Also, expreince tells that feeding beyond about 10 months is often only once or twice a day, sometimes more and sometimes through the night, but is not often needed during "public" times, so not many people actaully "see" it so think it dosen't exist.
I run a BF support group and am doing some training through LLL to become a peer support councellour and hope that I can get some "good" exposure for BF beyond 6 months or so.
Personally, I think when it is right for mum and baby to give up, then it is right, be that 3 months, six months or three years, however I would be uncomfortable seeing a 4 or 5 year old plus feeding!

I love how we all hear about the feral fives and ferocious fours once it's too late for any of us anyway! Lol.

Well, I've had to wean for medical reasons for both babies so this is a hot topic for me right now, but I don't think there really is a "should" about how long to breastfeed. Quite a personal decision and in my mind it's whatever works for that particular family. I know at which point I imagine I'd feel uncomfortable still breastfeeding, but having never actually reached that age still B/F with either child, who knows if I'd see it differently once baby was that age? I have friends who've fed past an age where I'd consider it, but that works beautifully for their families, so why not?

If she wants to keep feeding after that then I'll probably keep it up.

I've always said "if they're old enough to ask, they're too old", but then she already "tells" me she wants a feed by climbing on me and sucking at my clothes .

Mind you, having a breastfeed at night before bed is a bit different to demand feeding an older child. I think once a baby starts walking and talking it is a bit wierd to still be feeding in public - they are no longer a baby and should be able to eat/drink something else when hungry but thats just my own opinion. If a child really needs it I see no problem with feeding them.

I love BF'ing, with Keira I helped her self wean at about 18 months, just because I wanted my sleep back. When I first got preggo and had my girl I couldn't see myself BF for 3 months, let alone 6 or OMG 9! months, but it just keeps getting easier.

It is up to each individual family and your own family choices.

We have had a few discussions on this already.

Baby and Mum continue to benefit as long as breastfeeding continues and as long as they are both happy who really cares how old the child is.

The world health organisation reccomends breastfeeding til at least 2 years old so I don't really see how anyone can say its too old. Just because you personally couldn't breastfeed til 2 (for whatever reasons) doesn't mean 2 is too old as a genral rule IYKWIM

Edited by RachandJack
