There are so many cute NB outfits but they just seem so unpractical (or is that impractical?). I think my baby will be pretty much wearing AIOs and a wrap (and if no wrap then cardi's of some sort) for the first 3-4 months.

I've heard that polar fleece or anything unnatural IYKWIM like polyester doesn't breathe and can cause baby to overheat so have stuck with cotton, wool and merino.

    Author: kmarie
Subject: 25600
Posted: 07 May 2009 at 7:42pm

Everyone else sounds really helpful, will try keep mine brief -

12 bibs is prob too many to start with, usually babies don't need them until their taste buds come in at around 6wks old. I'd get a few beforehand (or stick with ones you're given) and buy more later if you find out your bubs is a dribbler (like mine - we have upwards of 15 bibs now and get through them all!!!)

Breast pads - not sure how you found it last time, but I found that the cloth pads were useless in the first 6wks, I'd soak through one side while I fed on the other! I used disposables till my supply was more predictable, about 3mths. So maybe stick with your 3 cloth sets but also buy 1 pkt of disposable pads just in case?

Buggy - if your buggy has a fully or almost-fully reclined position I wouldn't worry about a second headrest cuz you prob won't need it.

Massage oil - just get almond oil from your local health shop or supermarket, it's highly recommended, all natural and FANTASTIC for putting on bub's bottom as well, esp in the early days as it make the meconium slide off easier! (If only they'd told me that in time, lol.) Also recommended as a massage oil for preg mums Oh yeah, when you take bubs for his/her 6week check up, ask the dr for a prescription for a tub of zinc & castor oil barrier cream - it's huge, lasts for ages, and best of all, it's free! We used papaya ointment before the dr got us on to this, as it's totally natural and also has antiseptic properties.

We didn't (and still don't) use any products in Bethany's bath, or after her bath. Every so often we soap her hair with good 'ole fashioned pears soap but that's all. (She's got very sensitive skin.) Oh but you can put a few drops of almond oil in the bath water too if you want

That's it from me!
Happy getting ready!
I love your list by the way

ETA - lol sorry that wasn't so brief after all!!!

Edited by kmarie

And get the ones that do up the front - so you can quickly undo them and redress without having to fuss with tiny little t shirts and arms. Not the All-in-ones that only d up around the legs, as they are very long and ou have to get the whole baby in there like sauage - can be hard work at 3am with a wriggly little baby!

The kimono style all in ones are brilliant, I bought heaps of little tshirts and pants and never use them, cause the All-in-ones are way easier. Especially if they have feet. No little socks falling off all the time.

Merino Kids, Farmers, Dimples, Nature Baby and Cotton on have good ones. All ranges from expensive to super cheap.

Heres what I mean - hope this is helpful.

http://www.naturebaby.co.nz/organic_baby_products/organic_cotton_baby_clothes/stretch_and_grow.html
Author: Maya
Subject: 25600
Posted: 31 March 2009 at 9:53pm

Hmmmm, rip it apart you say

Merino and cotton is a great idea, my winter baby lived in layers of both, and most of our swaddle wraps were merino for extra warmth.

Nightgowns are brilliant, I wouldn't bother with tops and pants AND AIO's, choose one or the other or a combo of both but you really only need say 6 changes of clothes all up so maybe 3 top and pant sets and 3 AIO's?

You can never have too many hats and socks - you can never find them when you need them. Booties are a waste of time, they don't stay on.

Pillowcases make great hammock sheets.

I disagree with lil fatty re: wraps - I had about 6 and I used them all, I found if she spilled it was usually the wrap that wore it.

I never bothered with NB size clothes at all, even on Sienna who was only 6lb8oz - they all went straight into 000. It's not like it matters if it's a wee bit big, they're not exactly going to trip over it!

Agree with lil fatty re: blankets - if you swaddle you will probably only need one or two blankets as the swaddle will keep baby warm.

I wouldn't bother with long sleeve and short sleeve singlets, choose one or the other and 6 should be heaps.

2 cardigans is heaps. I found lil miss hardly needed cardigans/jackets etc as when we went out she was mostly swaddled and asleep. By the time she started being awake more (around 3 mths) it was warmer.

Leg warmers are great and really funky but not a neccessity. I didn't put them on my babies till they were crawling.

Agree with Aliasmum re: nursing bras. I only had 3 to start with, I now have 5 but I wanted to make sure I was going to stick with breastfeeding before I bought more.

Baby carrier/wrap is a great idea, I love mine but maybe best to wait till baby has arrived before you buy one so you can try it out first as different people suit different things.

Don't bother too much with toiletries, like ALiasmum said you'll get heaps of samples which will help you work out what suits your baby's skin.

Hope this helps some.

Oh and with my winter baby, the two best things I had were the (hired) snap and go wheels and the storm cover for the capsule. If it was pouring down I could put the cover on inside and put her in the car with it on then get the whole capsule out and snap it into the wheels while she stayed dry under the cover and it meant I wasn't fussing about with shifting her into the buggy in the rain. The snap and gos cost about $40 to hire and the storm cover was about $20.
