Author: busyissy
Subject: 25758
Posted: 08 April 2009 at 12:42pm

Hi,
I've had problems with both my babies and breastfeeding. With Dom I had huge supply problems and was taking lacta drops and a prescribed medication as well and had to express 3 times a day just to have enough milk for him to have before bedtime. With Isobelle my supply was fine but her reflux meant that she could be reclined at all and one day just refused to bf, we had no choice but to go to formula. I think if it wasn't for the reflux I would've been able to feed her just fine.
No one ever said what the cause of my problems with Dominic was but personally I think it is because I demand feed him for too long and he became a snacker. We got in a really bad cycle of him having a small feed, and then not being able to sleep but being too tired to feed well...etc.
All you can do is make sure you feed yourself well, work on having time to sit and focus on feeding (almost impossible with other children around!) and try and be relaxed about it. I used our local family centre a lot too.

I didn't make milk on my own at all, and was on Dom Peridone and expressing two hourly as well. Took meds for entire time I fed him, but that must have kicked my body into actiona nd there was no probs at all next time.

My advice is to see a lactation consultant at least once BEFORE you have baby and put a "plan" in place, that way you will have a plan in mind if things go to custard, instead of days of going ummm, yeah, well. Good luck!!!

    Author: Mum2L
Subject: 25758
Posted: 07 April 2009 at 9:04pm

I've had every breastfeeding problem under the sun, and I am still breastfeeding.

I've had cracked nipples, oversupply, overactive letdown, under supply, mastitis, blocked ducts, vasospasms, latch problems, dairy allergy issues with both myself and Lucian.

Cracked nipples - caused by my son's shallow latch. Was corrected by a lactation consultant while in hospital.

Oversupply - have no idea what caused this, but oversupply is quite common for the first couple of months

Vasospasms - something that you cannot avoid if you get them.

Mastitis - first time, caused by a combo of cracked nipples, exhaustion, and a infection in my c-section scar

At the moment, I am on domperidone (luckily I am now down to two tablets a day), after I got infective mastitis for a second time, along with a nasty cold and food poisoning. It really hit my supply hard. I tried every natural remedy, but at the end I had to resort to domperidone.

I also see a lactation consultant on a regular basis, who has helped me immensly with all of my breastfeeding problems. It has been worth the money.

Here is a link to a list of certified and registered lactation consultants in the BOP: http://www.nzlca.org.nz/search/bayofplenty.html
