Id love to have both! but we can only afford one or the other so fire it is.

In our last house DH would light the fire before he went to work at 6am so it was toasty when we got up. Often the fire would still be slowly ticking away i the moring from the night before!!

Oh I love a fire as well, at our last house when we renovated I refused to let DH take it out. But then after jack was born I got sick of having to light the fire and it taking ages to heat so told DH to get a heat pump. Hence us boarding up the fire at the new place and getting a heat pump. there is nothing like curling up beside a roaring fir while haveing a glass of wine or a good book or chocolates or all the above. A heater just doesn't so it. We have a heatpump and a fire now admittedly the insualltion in our house is less than perferct (at least we think that) however i still woun't be without my fire nothing heats like a fire does the heatpump is good while the fire is warming up its also good if you have a model that you can set the fan onto it moves the heat around the room and the rest of the house. DH and I just love fireplaces the inlaws have a heatpump and we both havnt been very impressed by it plus DH has wood on tap! lol (hes a builder and also has this strange facination with going to get firewood and chopping it up! wood is his passion! lol).

We just installed a hat pump and boarded up the fireplace (bought the house a month ago), but we are lucky as Bro is a fridgey and got it for cheap and installed for free.

Can I ask why you want a fire? In our last house I found a fire really hard when Jack was born as it took ages to heat the house whereas a heatpump is instant. Well the guy has been. He said that here we have the free insulation scheme but as our house is already done then no need for us but my mum is going to do it now!

I have heard nothing yet and its nearly been a week however there was an article in our local paper this morning about them saying that they are a bit behind. We are getting all of ours done for free (Fingers crossed)

There is a scheme going on here in Lower Hutt, if you have children under 5, asthma or respiratory illnesses and if you have a community services card they will fully insulate your home. We've sent all of our forms away, hoping for a good outcome.

we did ours through the sustainability trust

we got all our flooring and ceiling insulation done for $1200 (that was after the $1200 discount), and we got a heatpump installed through them as well for $2400 (after an $1100 discount).

My best friend and her DH used Energywise before bubs was born.
They paid $300 and got underfloor and in-the-wall insulation and their hot water tank was wrapped.

Is it through energywise?? We're applying for underfloor insulation and ceiling insulation in June when the next round of money comes up.

I know that for our 105sm house we'll only have to pay $500 for underfloor insulation so thats halved the cost for us. Im not sure of exactly what its called and also not sure what areas this is run in but we have it here where they will pay for half (around about!) the cost to put in heating so long as your house is older than 10 years, you own it and earn under $100,000 a year.

They are comming over tommorow to check out my house and all of our insulation (underfloor, ceiling, walls and cylinder wrap) and go from there.

Anyone else done this???
