We inadvertantly do that every now and then if Sam wakes between 4-5AM then I tell him it's still night time and that he needs to go back to sleep and 9 times out of 10 it works and he will sleep till at least 8AM which is BLISS! I would purposefully get up at that time to see if it works but I don't think I can drag myself out of bed at that time!

I checked out the sleep store stuff on night waking / early waking and it's solved out problem. They suggest things like moving the first sleep of the day forward by another half an hour, making sure it's not too light in the room, making sure they're not cold etc etc etc. I've referred to the sleep store website a lot and have always found something on there to help.

www.thesleepstore.co.nz

And then daylight savings changed everything. He now wakes at around 5am - we don't get him up until 6am, but he is definitely awake and will not settle back down.

I have heard about the waking before they wake and settling them back down, not brave enough to try it here... but will keep watching this space!

I have one of her books and it mentions something called "Wake to Sleep" where you wake them before 5.30am (in your case) and change the nappy say something about it not being time to get up yet and putting them back to bed. They say its a way of resetting their body clock. Sounds kinda scary but they say it does work.

For us I just go in and put the dummy in and sometimes I do this alot between 5.30 & 7 but I dont get DD up until 6.30 at the earliest, but she is alot younger so its probably different.

Hope you find a solution that works for you.

DH and I strongly disagree. How do we get him to realise that he's wrong and that 7am is a good wakeup (actually, at this point, I'll take anything after 6am). Do we just go in, settle, give dummy and go back to bed to bury our heads under pillows? If so, does this work???
